Guest JwX
ok so the cv shaft(or half shaft) is giving me a little bit of trouble so I ask if when It goes can I just the the shaft that goes thru the hub (stub shaft?) and take the shaft out and drive it as a rear wheel drive for a while? what bad thing could come of this? (sorry for the long winded post but I'm tired worked all day)
Guest edrach
Depends on how bad the shaft is. Front shafts can click for a long time before they actually fail. Once they fail, if you can keep the bad shaft from falling down and damaging other things, you can drive the car as a rear drive vehicle in 4WD mode (doesn't work for the AWD cars) far enough to get home. I once tied the shaft up out of the way with a coat hanger to get the 10 miles home and replace the shaft.
Guest JwX
ok but lets say I left it like that for a while what bad things could come of it?
Guest edrach
Hard to say. At the least, I'd try to remove the old shaft (leaving the spindle for the hub in). I don't know anyone who's tried leaving it that way long term. Used axles aren't that hard to come by or to install. Good luck with it.
