My 92 EA82 has 95k on it and the people who I bought i fromd said it has been doing it since 28K. I did flush the engine , then filled with 10W40 castrol and a quart of thick oil treatment , and this did nothing!So anyways just want to know wich brands are recommended? I think Im going to use 20W50 of something. I live in salem Oregon and am hoping this wont be to thick for the colder months? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have used 10w30, 10w40, and 20w50 mixed with MMO. the 10w30 was too thin, and you could hear it. the 10w40 always seems inconsistent. until it's been warmed up for a while, it seems like starting isn't as smooth as the other oil weights. 20w50 quieted it down (with MMO of course!) and it always started up nice. Just right when I hit about 2500 mi on this oil, it got back to being a little noisy. I say the oil + MMO. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Guest xenongod Posted August 8, 2003 Share Posted August 8, 2003 Okay...well...it almost doesn't really matter too much these days...Pennzoil and Quaker State are the same company...same as most other well known names. Valvoline and Mobil are two of the better oil companies who have remained independent in their refinement methods and tests....so that means I use and trust faithfully both of those brands...Valvoline 10w40 in Subaru...Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w30 in my Mazda...and whatever in my wife's car...she don't care. If your car has leaks...DON'T use synthetic...it will end up leaking more...closer molecules in short. I have talked to veteran mechanics through my years and I always see them installing Valvoline oil and live by it...so...that's it.:smokin: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Think I have Quaker State 10W30 in the '86, , been so long since it's been on the road, I don't really remember:( . Anyhow, i use straight 40 weight oil from Castrol, also added a bottle of cd2 for oil burning. As long as you have a good battery, it is no problem to turn the car over[i live in Florida} have driven around 800 miles, used to leak pretty good from around oil pan and filter. Guest Mac Posted August 9, 2003 Share Posted August 9, 2003 Castrol 20-50 all year long and I try to change every 3K miles under power. My home base is Louisiana. I've been using the GTX with a Fram X2 filter and just started trying the "High Mileage" stuff with same filter. 187K on my '85 GL SW, 30K of that since 1 MAR 03, about 15K under power, the rest under tow while the odometer still ticks off miles. Had been using Marvel Mystery Oil but a friend recommended Sea Foam so switched to that recently. May switch off and on. [50 miles]. put an ear to the motor before turning it off, clack gone! drove about 500 miles since and clack gone. fair oil pressure so im gonna replace pump and seals before winter just to treat it right but i was real amazed at what the oil did.
