Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) 04 Forester

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I want to install a nav system in my 04 forester XS.

I want to install the pioneer AVIC-N1, however, I need to know where the VSS is and how I can tap it for my installation.

Anyone who can help me out by answering any or all of the following would be my new personal hero.

1) Where is the VSS

2) How can I tap into it (vamp plugs, special adaptors, etc.)

3) IF anyone has installed a nav system with the need for a VSS, please respond and let me know your expieriences.

THanks,

sk

The VSS is in the tranny. However there will be a line going to the ECU and TCU.

I'd suggest getting a ECU I/O diagram from your dealer or somewhere, so you know what wire to tap into. Then all you need to do is use a T-tap or something similar to get the VSS signal.

Also, there are two speed sensors...assuming you have an automatic. You'll want to use VSS 2. That's the main speed sensor, and feeds the speedo on the gauge cluster.

From a Google search:

Speed Sense:

GRAY/BLACK

IN HARNESS IN PASSENGER KICKPANEL

Brake Lights:

WHITE/BLACK

AT SWITCH ABOVE BRAKE PEDAL

I hope to have my turn-by-turn navi installed this weekend. If all goes well I will post pics/details once its complete.

Thanks,

Any pics you could post, or stumbling points for the install would be great.
