I've got a 98 Legacy that makes noise and feels a bit bumpy when I turn corners. The noise comes from the rear. It seems like it's coming from the rear driver's side, but that could be because I'm hearing it from the driver's side. The guy at my local garage (who I trust, but who is not a Subaru expert) says it's a bad rear differential. He also said that I should have it replaced at the dealer because it's not an easy repair. Does this seem reasonable? Are there any easy ways to verify a that a rear diff is indeed bad?

Thanks,

Doug

Hi. I am brand new here and I am having the EXACT same problem with my '98 legacy. I've had both front axels replaced thinking it was the CV joints. :-\

What is torque bind?????

Thanks,

K

torque bind is your tranfer clutches for your awd, they bind when you turn it feels like the whole car is jittering and shaking. they are in the back of your transmission they need to be replaced could be costly depending on the dealer.

the dealership i work at the repair is about $900 or so, it won't go away, once they start to bind they are pretty much shot

I got a 98 OBW and there is a howling noise coming from the rear end. I took it my mechanic and he said it a problem in the rear differential. I live in San Jose California and wanted to know if anyone out there knew of a good repair place that wont screw me like the dealership. I took my car to Stevens Creek Subaru and got raped when head gasket went out.
