Guest roosofallevil
Alright its time for me to exspose my ignorance. I see these messages posted about EA81 and EA82s and I`m not sure what is being talked about. I`ve owned 6 Subes currently own 4 so I am not Sube dumb. Do these codes refer to the older (pre 85) and newer (86+) engines thats what I`m guessing , but it sure would be nice to know for sure. roosofallevil  <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o">
Guest baccaruda
close. EA82 started in 1985. Not sure what the first year for EA81 was. I use those terms to refer to cars that had them and not just the engines.. like I'll say "EA82 wagon" or whatever if I don't know or care what year it was
Guest qman
EA81 refers to the 1800cc overhead valve engine. EA82 = overhead cam. Qman
Guest EJ
The only dumb question is the one that is not asked. On this board there is a wealth of knowledge from alot of people, all you have to do is ask. Everyone has to start somewhere.
Guest wjmgl10
EA52 1L, 63 1.4L, 71 1.6L and 81 1.8L are single cam, pushrod type overhead valve (OHV) engines. The EA82 1.8L is over head cam, or OHC. EJ series is the EJ18, 20, 22, and 25 (1.8L, 2.0L, 2.2L, 2.5L respectively) are all flat 4's. EJ18, 22 and the phase II 25 is SOHC, 16 vavles. The EJ20 is DOHC, as well as the EJ25 phase I, and so called phase 1.5. The ER27 2.7L is the EA82 with 2 more cylinders added on. Its OHC of course. EF10 and 12 1.0L and 1.2L are inline 3's, SOHC, 12 valve found only in th small Justy. Only the EF12 was in US versions, I think. The EG33 3.3L is the flat 6 found in the SVX, DOHC 24 valves. The EZ30 3.0 L is SUBARU's newest flat 6, DOHC as well, 24 vavles. EA82 was from 1985 to 1994 in the "L" Series, the DL, GL, GL-10, Loyale, Leone, RX and XT. EA52-81 was form the 70's to 1984, but the EA81 in the Brats until 1987 or so. EJ's are in leagcys impreza, outback forester and such from 1990 and up. Leagcy 1989 else where but US, I think. EG and EZ in the 90's as well. EZ not until 2000. Does that help you out? if anyone spots an error, lemme know.
Guest x silvershad0w x
EA81's were in all hatchbacks (not 3 door coupes) as well as the Brats after 84 I think. Thats all I can think of that wasn't in your post.
Guest roosofallevil
Ok now I know too much information is better than not enough. Knowledge is power. roosofallevil
Guest Hondasucks
let's not forget the EA61 (1100cc) used in the ff-1, EA62 (1300cc) used in the ff-1 1300G, the EA63 (1400cc) used in the DL/GL etc.. till 75 or so when it was replaced with the EA65 which as far as I can tell,is still 1400 CC's but something with the cylinder liners in them is different.. Then the EA71 1600cc, which also had a high compression version (Don't know if it has any additional markings on it to mark is as HC) used in the FE coupe (9.3:1 compression)

Guest chef tim
I'm gonna "pin" this for a couple of days, then archive it. If some one could put this info into a table and post (like Mick did with his sticker orders)That would be great. Thanks, Tim
Guest PoorManzImpreza
there is an ej16 as well ;-) Kaz
Guest Hondasucks
EJ16 really? Never heard of one of those.. Sounds interesting.. I've also heard of an EA81 Diesel that Fuji used in their forklifts, but I've never seen one (Would like to get ahold of one). Also, not ALL the hatchbacks from 85-89 had the EA81, the GL had the EA81 but the STD / Standard had the EA71. I had a 1987 STD Hatchback (my first roo *sniffle*) and it had an EA71 with a side-mounted starter and a 4 speed manual, 2WD.And if ya don't believe me, the engine is in my 82 4x4 sedan. Guest subyguy
did they make two ea71 because the ea71 that i pulled out of a 81 hatch 2wd 5speed. had the ea71 on the passenger side of the motor at the very front and the one i saw today in a 1979 FE had it on the driverside at the back of the motor. or am i just dreaming. Guest Hondasucks
well there were 2 EA71's, sorta.. The newer version with the side-mounted starter, which more resembled teh EA81, but it didn't like to crack heads. and the older one that had the starter in the middle. And I'd like a pic of the EJ16.. Must be a non-US motor...

Guest LeoneTurbo
In Japan, the EJ15, EJ16, EJ18, EJ20 and EJ20T are or were available in the Impreza. EJ15 - EJ18 being SOHC, EJ20 being SOHC or DOHC, and EJ20T DOHC ofcourse. In the Legacy, the EJ16*, EJ18*, EJ20, EJ22, EJ25 and EJ20TT are or were available. EJ20 both DOHC or SOHC, EJ22 only SOHC, EJ25 only DOHC (although other parts of the world also got the SOHC version later on) and the EJ20TT is also DOHC. *EJ16 and EJ18 were also available in carburetted versions, I believe for the mid east! The Forester gets the EJ20 SOHC, EJ25 DOHC or EJ20T. Then, there's the EK-series. They are inline-2 engines, either 2-stroke or 4-stroke, and air- or watercooled. And the EN-series, being the inline-4 engines fitted to the Rex, Vivio and Pleo. Japan Domestic Market engines all are 658cc now (EN07), but the engine started out as 549cc (EN06). For the export markets, the EN08 (758cc, I believe) was mounted in the Rex. EN07 8V SOHC 46 hp EN07 8V SOHC SuperCharged 52 hp (mild charge) 64 hp EN07 16V DOHC SuperCharged 64 hp

Guest Hondasucks
I dont' see why Subaru doesn't export the Vivio and the Pleo to the US to compete with the garbage coming from Korea. I know Subaru can make a HELLUVA better 8,000 dollar car than the Koreans can..
