Take muffler off turbo car?

Recommended Posts

i doubt that it would hurt anything but your wallet if a cop catches you, unless your lucky enough to live where the dont care. the rest of the exhaust system should creat enough backpressure for the turbo. in theory. i ran myrx without a mufflr for a little while but that wasnt very far.

leave the downpipe on, but you can take off all the exhaust behind the downpipe without problems. With nothing but the downpipe my old turbowagon was loud but not ungodly loud. (the 8" of exhaust sticking out the front of my present car would be considered ungodly I think ;) )

ungodly loud was when i took the exhaust off of my impreza, all i had on it was the borla headers and the cats. it was soo loud, i loved it too. the only downside was that i had no low end torque. was fun on the highway though, top endd was crazy. tap the gas when i was going around 65 and before i knw it, everything was a blur. or so it seemed

The turbo creates enough backpressure for you, you dont need exhaust to do that. IF you cut off the muffler it will make it louder, but not so loud you cant enjoy the ride. My RX has no muffler. It has about 1/2 of its original exhaust and a 90 degree bend that dumps the exhaust right in front of the rear tire. Looks good, and sounds good too. Doesnt sound great, you'd need a flowmaster or something for a great sounding exhaust.

But if your affraid of harming your car... you dont have to be.

The turbo itself does an excellent job of muffling the "raspiness" of an opened exhaust. By design, the more exhaust you can evacuate the more the turbocharger can spool to make more boost more easily. It gets a tiny bit louder, but its not a raspy loud.. its a throaty loud. Plus you get the joy of hearing the turbo whine a bit better. :D

I've removed the mufflers and any other restrictions on all my turbo cars. Everything behind the turbocharger is straight pipe. zzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeewooooosh... :headbang:
