Guest calebz Posted August 3, 2003 Share Posted August 3, 2003 No matter what deck you get, you will need to do 2 things to mount it in the stock stereo spot.. you will need to relocate your trip computer, and get an adapter.. the hole isn't quite deep enough for a DIN sized deck. im oved my trip computer to the cubby hole under the stereo. works well there, even if it is sideways now. <img src="http://home.comcast.net/~czaharris/Pic003.jpg" style="border:0;"/> Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest WagonsOnly Posted August 4, 2003 Share Posted August 4, 2003 I'd use Subaru's AM/FM/Cassette (the one with the equalizer and the trip computer--it was available as a dealer option for around $180 in '87) and add a trunk-mounted CD changer. Most 6-disc changers mount nicely in the under-floor stowaway, if you put them in horizontally. Advent makes a unit that broadcasts the sound to your AM/FM radio--there's a little remote that you can mount anywhere on your dash, and you simply turn on the changer, select the disc and track and tune the radio to the preset station. You can look for them at JC Whitney or at car-audio places, I'll try and find one online. As has already been said, though, DIN-size units are too deep and narrow for the car without an adapter, and some units protrude so far you end up banging your fingers on them when shifting (as was the case in my father's DL). I, personally have never experienced that.. even with the face of my stereo opened/flipped down as it is in the picture a couple of posts up.. You won't have so much play then.... and also - that kit works for EA81's too - they sell it as working for EA82's, but it will work for both with a little modification. Guest edrach Posted August 4, 2003 Share Posted August 4, 2003 I mounted a standard DIN type Clarion radio/CD player in my '86 wagon. Went in without any trouble with the standard Subaru install kit. No interference with the shifter either altho it sticks out as shown in the previous photo (from calebz) due to the adapter. Wiring can be a problem since original had common ground on the speakers and most current radios need the return line to each speaker separate back to the radio. If you buy a decent deck from a stereo place, they almost always will include a free install (Car Toys charged an extra $25 because of the wiring hassle but it was easier than doing it myself). If you want a standard Subaru radio/casette package I have a used one that I'd be willing to part with for $25 plus shipping. You might be able to pick up the matching CD (if it exists) off ebay. Guest WagonsOnly Posted August 4, 2003 Share Posted August 4, 2003 The 2WD DL shifter is worst as far as long throws go--new bushings probably wouldn't help as it's pretty close to factory spec (new clutch/bearings/bushings 40K miles ago). there's actually very little free play in it, but first is way up near the dashboard and second is halfway to the backseat. The 2WD GL shifters were somewhere in the middle. The best I've used are the 4WD shifters, all models, all year EA82s. (This is only with my somewhat-limited experience.) Guest thesubarukid Posted August 4, 2003 Share Posted August 4, 2003 The problem with just adding one of the cd changers is that you still only have 40 watts of power. With the addition of a new head unit, your sound quality increases a lot. You can still get the sound quality up, but in the long run it would cost you more, buying the amp and the cd changer, but if you have the money... So does the whole computer unit just unbolt and is able to drop down to the cubby hole, or is there a bit of rewiring to do ( not to good with electric stuff yet... ) Was it a fairly easy conversion? Guest calebz Posted August 5, 2003 Share Posted August 5, 2003 What, specifically, type of ideas are you looking for.. 1) you can use a stock deck 2) you can use a later model oem or non-soob deck(requires adaptation) 3) you can use a non-oem deck(ususally din or din and a half, and requires adaptation) thats about it for deck options. if you're asking about what <em>kind</em> of non-oem deck to use.. well that is solely personal preference and needs.. do you need to hook up amps? I.E.My deck has 6 RCA outputs in the back. I bought a deck setup like this because in my last car, I had two huge amps and capacitors and sub and stuff like that ..2600 watts.. It was pretty cool, but in my soob, I am just using plain old speaker wire from the deck.. If I had bought a new deck for the soob, I wouldn't have gone out of my way to make sure it had all the amp/rca outs ya get my drift?
