just replaced tranny and speedometer wont work now

Recommended Posts

Hello out there in Suby land... we're new to this suby site and I have a question for my husband (he's covered in car gook so I wont let him at the keyboard!) He just installed a used transmission in our '92 Legacy LS wagon, the installation went along ok, but now the speedometer wont work. Would the speedometer in the new ( used) transmission be the culprit? Or would there be something else we need to be looking at? Thanks for any clues you all might have~

thanks northguy.... he's been rechecking all connections and tightening everything.....still no luck. Its odd that the speedometer worked fine before installing this different one....

Thanks for the quick reply, and I hope you have a heated garage up there in Alaska!!!

The tranny may have a broken drive gear for the speedometer. I think the gear is plastic but not sure. Your hubby may be able to verify the speedometer is working ok by using a cordless drill attached to the cable and turn the cable. If the unit works ok then he will have to repair the cog. I think there is an access plate to get at the cable drive and replace it.

Hi Cougar~ thanks for the idea of the drill to power the cable..... and we just tried it and it didnt give any indications of life when he tried it ( both directions) so I guess its time to look at getting a new cable or other approach! Jeesh, youd think after just going through installing another tranny we'd get a break here!!!

Thanks again~

< going to try locating this to the newer suby area as advised~

it may have pulled away from the back of the instrument cluster. i had replaced a cable on a 3 door and it wouldnt work, realigned the slot aon the tranny, i had to pull the instrument cluster to make sure the suare part was meshed and moved the car to check it before i put it back together

I would first inspect the cable and make sure the other end is ok by pulling it out of the housing. Since the gauge worked before the work it is doubtful that it is the problem. The end of the cable may be broken and a replacement is needed or the cable just needs to set in the gauge end correctly.
