Guest slagathor1
Ok, i'm at wits-end trying to find some web sites or links that cater to the EA82 for how to's or suggestions for performance_upgrades. .I can't find em'!!.I've already been through the Ultimate Subaru site & only found a few things.I've found MANY soobie performance sites but they mostly cater to new soobies.. Anything from shade tree mechanic tricks (my specialty) all the way up to sites that sell performance parts for the EA82 are what i'm lookin' for. I just bought a 92' Loyale 4WD (non-turbo of course, boo-hoo) in near mint condition 2 weeks ago & just finished cleaning up all the little "granny never popped the hood" problems with the engine & tranny, one of which was on my previous post.. Now i'm walking around, tripping over my bottom lip because my retired 89' DL 2WD could've kicked the 92's butt in a drag race ANY day (I know weight disadvantage speaks for some of that of course).Anyway, any suggestions?? Thanks a bunch!! Tony..
Guest Flowmastered87GL
drill out or cut on the bottom of the airbox and get a K&N filter, that should help it. Or you could get a cold air intake setup and build a little wall to keep engine heat away and some ducting from below the bumper to suck in cold air from. Change out the muffler to something less restrictive also. If you have steel wheels change to alloys. If you yank the engine, maybe have the flywheel lightened. You can go with a hotter igntion system too (such as MSD or ACCEL)
Guest slagathor1
Thanks those are great ideas..I have been toying around for the last week anyway with different ways to get more cool air into the system & that'll probably be one of the first things I finish.I have also considered a different coil,I need to go see about the price.. Anybody else know of tricks, web sites, or performance parts?.I really thought i'd get more than one reply on this question but that's ok, any input is appreciated.. Thanks a bunch!! Guest calebz
The stuff that mike listed above is about it.. there isn't a whole lot of performance(speed/power) to be had from the spfi motor.. there is one guy here that turbo'd his.. but it seems to me it would be easier to find a turbo car.. Guest archemitis
SPFI IS AWESOME. mess with timing, put a glasspack on there. cut out air box. floor the heck out of it. it likes it. my spfi had alot of power for a subaru and just intake and exhaust helps alot. Guest wjmgl10
Run 93 and advance the timing a tad. You can also get some cams going on if you feel like messing with the engine internals any....12:1 compression, 110 octane competition fuel...go to MPFI with spyder intake and port it like heck, big friggin throt. body, balance the engine, 500CC injectors...
Guest oobnuker
Here's what I have done: Custom MAF Adapter to allow a 3" Cone Filter Relocated filter to spare tire area Cut a BIG hole in the hood (scoop to come soon - wire mesh for now) Removed A/C, Power Steering, Mechanical Fan Double Row Turbo Radiator Advanced Timing to 22 BTDC Run 93 or whatever super is around here (Northeast) Accel Super Stock Coil High energy wires Replaced PCV system with Oil Separator/Catch Can Added several engine grounds to various points of the car Sliced off exhaust just after second catalytic convertor, added 2" straight pipe exiting just before the driver's side rear tire. No muffler. That's about all I've done. One other thing I would like to do is experiment with shutting off the little heater hose that goes into the intake just below the throttle body. I know in the winter I need to turn it back on, but I am thinking that in the summer it may help make a little more power by reducing the intake charge temperature. Also, eventually experiment with port matching the intake and the heads, and doing some other fun stuff with the dremel... The car runs really sweet! Has a lot of low end torque and revs to the redline VERY quickly. It's got 169,000+ miles on it and I drive it 60+ miles daily. It's never going to be a real screamer I fear, but it is an awful lot of fun on the twisty turny roads around here. <img src="http://www.arventerprises.com/subaru/IM001227t.JPG" style="border:0;"/>
Guest wjmgl10
Dude...thats awesome! Just imagine what a new (all stock tho) engine and some cams would have that thing doing...
Guest oobnuker
Thanks! I try I would love to rebuild it. I love turbo engines and have owned them in the past...So it's tough to build a N/A motor if I'm going to build ANY motor....I have an EA82T sitting on my garage floor that needs a rebuild... It would be really cool to explore a high-rev, high-compression N/A motor. Isn't there a piston swap that could be done to raise the CR on these motors? Isn't SPFI 9.5 already? I wonder how far I could go... With a fresh motor, what could be done to get the revs higher? What kind of output would we be seeing if we were revving like 8000 RPMs? I used to have "Desktop Dyno" Program that was pretty neat...I will look for one on the web. Or how about quad or dual throttle body CIS conversion? Hahahaha! Guest slagathor1
Yeah that'd be pretty awesome to build a scoop air intake on mine, I can see the great advantages that would have..Only thing is,this car is in WAY too nice of shape to do any cutting on,I don't think i'd have the heart to do it.Guess i'll have to bring it in from underneath or think of something really crafty that nobody has done yet.Hmmmmm.... Oobnuker, isn't your exhaust loud??.I'm definately gonna do something with my exhaust but i'd rather it be a more "throaty" sound & not very loud.. WJMGL10, I see you have an RX.I envy you BIGTIME!!.I looked for one of those FOREVER with no luck.Searched the net, auto dealers, etc..I'll bet if i'd known about this board sooner, i'd had a better chance of locating one..Oh well, someday. The more ideas i'm getting on this subject, the more i'm thinkin' about keeping the spare motor I have from my old retired 89' DL.Could be a good start for a serious screamer motor in the future with a fresh rebuild & some radical new internals.Hmmmmm again!!! Tony in southern Illinois.. 89' DL 2WD retired (rust in peace old buddy) 92' Loyale 4WD
Guest oobnuker
It's a bit loud - but it is a good loud. There is no "Lawnmower in a tincan" sound from this thing. I get looks all the time and once had a guy just about do a flip in a parking lot. He had a Camaro parked right next to me. He was walking up to his car just as I was starting mine and just DID NOT expect that throaty growl from an Old Subaru Wagon! Also the intake SCREAMS - or should I say HOWLS. So yeah - it's loud - loud enough to make my wife hate it...But it sounds freakin' awesome. Here is an old sound bite - I was pulling it up a hill so it's not too dramatic: www.arventerprises.com/subaru/loyale.wav
Guest wjmgl10
slagathor1: There used to be about 3 RXs on Autotrader.com...one was rather close to me in Boone. But this one was right around the corner. I used to dream of the RX Coupes...so i know what you mean! Get that other engine and do something with it!
