oldgerman
I have a 94 legacy sedan 2wd, 103,000 miles, auto trans that I bought with a rod knock and just replaced the motor. The transmission has shown an unusual problem. It shifts smooth at all times and does not slip on acceleration, but when you reach a constant cruising speed ,the trans will start to shutter and vibrate, almost feels like a braking effect. When this occures, it feels like the trans makes a shift, however no RPM change appears. If you add gas, the trans shifts and you lose the shutter until you settle to a new constant speed. If you let off and lose speed it seems to shift and you lose shutter. This only occures once you have settled into a constant cruising speed. No other noises or irregularities. I serviced the trans at engine replacement, and the problem is not CV joint related. Any Ideas?? Thanks
Legacy777
When the shutter happens, what happens if you move the gear selector from Drive to Neutral? Does the shutter go away, or continue?

Storydude1
If you shift to neutral, the shutter stops. Put it in drive and settle to constant speed and shutter starts again. Sounds like your converter is not locking up, or is not holding as well as it should. Now, fixing that is another thread all together..
Legacy777
Does sound like an issue with the torque converter locking up/not locking up. Not sure what the fix would be though.
Storydude1
Does sound like an issue with the torque converter locking up/not locking up. Not sure what the fix would be though. I don't know enough about the Subaru TCM to make a determination. I'm not sure if Lock-up is controlled by fluid pressure, or a solinoid. If it's solinoid, a swap MIGHT change it. Of course, I'd also need to know how the tranny unlocks the converter as well. Most are done by brake application(electrical), some are controlled by TV pressure, some by Speed sensors. john in KY
Fairly sure the TC lockup function is controlled by a solenoid. Offhand don't recall which one. But the good news is all the solenoids aren't difficult to fet to after the pan is removed.
tunered
im almost sure that if you would ride the brake very gently as you get the shudder this would kick out the lockup on the converter, this might tell you something. ed
Legacy777
Yeah a solenoid controls lockup. I think it's the duty b solenoid
