Sounds like someone is using a generic engine code that is used by most Japanese manufacturers (but not Subaru). I found many hit on Google that list an EJ22E, the dates range from 9/89 to 9/99, which covers at least two different versions of the engine. I think they are using the "e" as a notation that the engine is electric fuel injected.

Thanks for the insights. I'm now awaiting some more clarity on the engine's condition. After seeing the eBay auction was from an auto salvage yard, I went to their website to see if I could get any more information on the engine. Surprise, surprise, the inventory listing says "NO-RUN". I e-mailed them to find out what the trouble is and why it's not mentioned in their online auction.
