Welcome to the madness!! I personally like the wagons for the available cargo space as well as people room...all depends on your needs really. look around and see what fits you and your needs.

The coupe is sportier looking...still plenty of cargo space if ya need it, but harder for people to get in/out of backseat...

Good luck finding the Subaru of your dreams!

Now it is time for me to get back to work on my Suby :horse: (jk)

Good to have you aboard. You'll find all the 80's subies are easy to work on. The older ones (early 80's) have less "garbage" under the hood. But the newer 80's subies don't break down as much. Well, that's how it seems. Like the guy said above, look around for what model suites you. There all good (and bad, but what car isn't?)

Good luck on your hunt.

Like,

wagons - useful

sedans - useful

coupes - coool

edit: ooops, forgot about the Subaru XT's - in my opinion, very cool

OR you could go the older models

Ute - useful/fun ... EDIT: changed link to a pic of my ute. Their called Brat's in the US (Brumbies here in Aus)

Hatch - useful

wagon(ea81) - useful

coupe(ea81) - fun/cool

sedan(ea81) - .. i dunno, I guess you can decide.

And then theres the justy's... completely different. They use east/west inline 3cyl engines. Not the "boxer" styled flat fours...

As for the AWD. You will find only (some of?) the Turbo models are AWD. Other wise they can be 4WD, 4WD duel range, or FWD.

And in case you don't know: dual range means you have a special lever that when you pull it further then just the 4WD selection it makes the gearing in the car slower, their great for offroading.

907front-side.jpg this is a brat-aka-a ute (that's what they're called over in Australia)

the brats aren't available new anymore, closet subaru now a days would be the baja.i'm sure you can pick up a brat in good condition.

And if you didn't know: The difference between AWD and 4WD is that AWD or what it is called on the older subaru's is FullTime-4WD means that the car has three differentials, not just two. This makes it possible to drive in "AWD" on the pavement without damaging the gearbox. 4WD will get harder to drive on pavement the more steering lock you have on. And the car will jump around going "chirp, chirp" from the tyres.

Althought, if you want to go offroading, get a 4WD D/R. These have a better low range then the FT4WD (AWD) gearbox's and there for makes it so you can drive slower off the road, which is good, because bumps break parts.

A WRX? Now thats new terrory I have yet to step in. But theres plenty of help with those in the New Gen section. Just remember, newer = harder to fix. And of cause they cost a lot more.. But I bet the WRX is fun to drive. I know my brothers turbo 626 (220hp) is. :)

Well I own a modified cobb stage II 04 wrx and a 87 brat. They are both fun but in diffrent ways. I how ever dont think the new subarus are hard to work on. It just suck on the wrx that you have to remove the inner cooler to do any thing... even just checking the trans fluid level.:banghead:.

I personaly would get a old body type (2 door) RS for your first subaru. They look great (better then the wrx) and they cost less the a wrx plus you still get the na 2.5 liter motor which is a great motor to do short dirt tracks!!

WELCOME to the Board!!!

If you are looking for a fun coupe, I would suggest a Subaru SVX, XT6, or RX if you can find one. RX's have the EA82T engine, which isn't always a fun engine to work on if you ever decide to start modding. It is plagued by a host of problems and shortcomings, but if you have the time, cash, know-how, and a good, reliable tuner, CAN be made fast and reliable. So I guess it is safe to say that an SVX or XT6 is probably going to be your best choice for the older Subies. I personally am a wagon fan and own a 1988 GL-10 Wagon which has alot of mods, and also a 2002 WRX Wagon. You might also look into mid 90s Subaru Impreza coupes, in which you can easily swap alot of the later model motors into. All depends on your taste in Subarus and how far you are wanting to go with the vehicle.

Anyway, welcome aboard and I sincerely hope that you find what you are looking for.

Patrick
