Air/Water Intercoolers

Recommended Posts

I did a search and couldn't find any information on this site pertaining to my question. So here it goes....

Is there any reason why the turbocharged people here haven't considered using an air/water intercooler like that from the Legacys? I'm thinking that maybe the Legacy air/water intercoolers and other parts would be able to fit in some of the 1.8ltr turbos engine bays where the spare tire would be. Just curious!

I think I read of one mention of it here from a guy named 'Adam N.D.J.' thinking about using it but besides that, I couldn't find much.

Here's an interesting how-to page that I found someone linking to from another site.

One reason is that it is much simpler to install and air to air I/C. Installing a water to air I/C requires adding an elecrtic water pump, additiona tubing and an addition radiator (simpler to the condensor of the A/C system). Far more complex the just adding the air to air I/C. And unless you are in an area that has High temperatures, the water to air is not any better then the air to air.

Unless you add some good stuff to the water like dry ice!! Yes, I was talking of doing this. A buddy of mine has one on his Legacy and it rocks! So I figured if it's good for the Leg, then it should be good for me. It is a little more complicated than and air/air, so thats why most people don't use em, with the a/a all you have to do is put it on and cut a hole in the hood, good to go. Me on the other hand, I've got an 84 Turbo, and want to keep it looking as stock as possible, no matter whot I do to it undernieth the hood. If I have a big ol hole and scoop in the hood, too many people will get the idea that I actually have power and stuff, (cough cough).

This is why I asked. For those people who like keeping the stock look but have some extra power underneath. I thought it may be more complicated trying to fab a hood scoop at the proper location then by using an air/water intercooler setup that's already out there for the Subaru. It would be nice to see someone that has already done this though and their take on the results. :brow:
