Brumby towing Brumby

Recommended Posts

Picked up my second brumby today for $200!

Reg on hold and needs a warrant as it was in storage in a farm shed for the last year, pretty good nick body wise.

Stuffed gearbox, it's stuck in 3rd Low, hence why they sold it so cheap. But i have a perfectly good spare sitting in the workshop just waiting for me to get around to doing the swap!

Damn you get all the good subie deals around chch and central otago. I did see an absolute mint gen2 brumby the other night when i was in gisborne though, with new warrant for $2K - seemed pretty reasonable considering what people are asking on trademe. Mine's pretty knocked about but I really like the gen1 styling over gen2. are those 14" WRC rims? I've got a set of them, fthanks to the NZ rally.

So how did it tow? What sort of speeds could you go? And whats your red Brumby (the one towing) got under the hood again?

Just wondering cos I'd like to tow a car on a trailer with mine.

Oh, and nice find... looks great. Whats the plan with this one?

Rims are BMB's, i got them off a local rally guru who used to race leone's, now he does Escorts in the classic races.

I borrowed that trailer and it's a race car transport trailer, which is designed to be towed behind a lower vehicle than my lifted brumby, so yea, it was on an angle, but it never scrapped on the road luckly.

That was the first bit of towing i've done since i did the RXII running gear install (EA82T, constant AWD 5 speed and LSD). In general I think the brumby is too light to be doing regular towing on this kind of weight, but the constant AWD really helps things along in think, I was able to cruise at 90KPH , that the legal limit for towing in New Zeland.

Previously when i had the Twin carb EA81 with D/R 4 speed , i felt it struggled a fair bit towing other vehicles or trailers.

I'll post some more pics when i pull the white one apart a bit more, i need to see what condition it's in as an all round vehicle, before i decide whats in store for it... I.E Parts car, Another road car, modded dedicated off roader etc.

I started pulling it apart today, The only real rust i found was in the back tray, so I decided to remove the back tray and it'll be replaced with Aluminum diamond tread plate. See attached photo.

The engine started up staight away, after a check of the oil and filters etc. It runs really nicely and has the electronic distributor, SWEET.

The under body is in excellent condition, as are most panels, it's been rust proofed from new i think, so it's really paid off now!

I wee trip to the panel beaters will freshen it up and give it a fresh coat of paint and redo the graphics, bumpers etc. nice

I'll be replacing the interior with good condition panels and leather Legacy seats, plus a legacy Momo steering wheel. I'll have to install sounds as well, Just a CD/MP3 head unit, 2 way components in the doors and a 6X9 sub behind the passenger seat.

I'll then be fitting a 5 speed D/R and rear disks, then putting it back on the road.

It's in too go a nic to convert to a dedicated off roader, so I'll keep looking for a donor vehicle for that project.

I'll post more pics when i have them.
