Front turn signal bulb

Recommended Posts

OK, I give...

My 96 Legacy right front turn signal is intermittent, so I was gonna swap out bulbs. Do I have to take the whole frikkin' headlamp assembly out of the car? I don't see any other way.

Of course, the Chilton's that is supposed to cover my year doesn't really cover it, since it tells me to remove the screws in the front of the lens cover, and there aren't any...

How many bolts do I remove to get this thing out? I see two on the top of the light housing, and one that is behind the front grill. Is the bottom of the assembly held in with bolts as well?

Did the same guy design this setup and the cup holder as well??

No man! There is a single screw holding it in. Open the bonnet, and you should be able to see it at the front corner. Screw head faces upward. Once that is out, pry the light out carefully with your fingers, it's still supported by two plastic clips :D

WRONG. :)

Unfortunately, you do have to remove the whole headlamp assembly.

The single piece corner lamp and headlamp assembly only exists in the 95-96 models. They switched to a 2 piece version in 97. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

You got the screws right - Two on the top, and a third on the side behind the grill, which you will have to remove.

See. I knew this guy did the cup holders too!

I wonder if he was involved in the engineering of the 2.5 head gaskets as well...

Thanks for the info RC. I was gonna take it apart last night, but wanted to be sure.

  • 1 year later...

Yes, this thread is (was?) really old. But I wanted to clarify for the next person that does a search like I just did, so they have correct information.

I have a '97 Legacy OB and my left front turn signal bulb just stopped working. In my Haynes manual it shows the turn signal assembly separate from the headlight assembly, and that you just pull the turn signal assembly and replace the bulb. Wrong. It's all one piece on my car.

So, 1997 Legacy Outbacks (or at least mine) have one assembly for the headlight and turn signal. You gotta pull the whole thing to replace the turn signal. Based on my car, it wasn't until '98 that they made the change to a two piece assembly. Unless it was a running change in the '97 MY?

Ah yes. The Haynes manual used a 1998 Outback to take the pictures. If you look at the back cover, there's a picture of the mechanic and one of the photographers working on the car and the blurb mentioned that it was a 1998 Outback. Looks like Subaru made some revisions to the Outback every year between 95-99.

In regard to the headlights, if the lens is clear and smooth and you can see the diamond reflector, it is 2 peice; the 1 peice headlight/turnsignal combo has stripes in it to focus the beam.

Just did this on my lunch break.

The only thing I would add to what has already been said is that after you remove the grill, remove the three screws (two on top, on on the side) you need to pull the headlight assembly straight towards you (towards the front of the car). Don't try to move it sideways or swing it outward. I had to pull pretty hard (enough to rock the car forward a bit), then it popped out.

I bought two bulbs 'cause if I didn't I knew the other side's bulb would burn out within 10 miles

FWIW the procedure is also described in the manual, although not everyone has one of those available.
