danrenfroe2016
1980 Brat with 1979 EA71 motor 4WD Well, Tried to change the oil today. The OIL plug is stuck, I mean really really stuck. I need to get an oil pan from someone if possible. Also went extreme suburb greenbelt crawling (hey, I live in suburbia, grass floodplains / drainage areas is about at good as it gets!) But the subaru did very well, I went up very very steep grades (wet grass) and it pulled up very easily. Was very fun, 4WD works really great. Also one of my CV joints boots has a small tear in it, It must have happend in the alst three weeks, as when i bought it it had no tears. (was torn before i went offroad) Is there replacment retrofit boots that can be installed without removing the axle? later -Daniel
idosubaru
the oil pans are very tricky to replace. they look real easy but are not. i would try to bust the plug loose, it might just be too tight? it may not be stripped. if it is there are other options i believe...oversized plugs i think? quick boots are available for some older subarus but are not a good option. although i feel your pain that replacing the boot isn't a good option either, i agree! i just wait and replace the axles. as long as that boot is torn, off roading (dirt, water..SAND) will destroy a CV joint very quickly...otherwise they can last many years for daily driving and no salt/rock on the road like they do in the snowy areas. if you do it soon a new boot will do. wait too long and you'll need an entire axle. Ok, will try to get it off again, the bolt is rounded and then some, the best closed end wrench didnt get it off. I may need to take it to my shop and get them to weld a larger stud to it to get the torque neccessary to back it out, the transmission bolt was just like this, but it was such a large diameter, they i was able to get it free with a wrench and 3' cheater pipe. no damage, just an idiot tighend it up to much. Quick Boot???? Where do i get a quick boot from. This seams to be my best bet at i have a replacment axle allready, but would like to save it until necessary. thanks! -Daniel
danrenfroe2016
Ok, I found plenty of boots, I guess i just un do the hub bolt, disconnect the top of the strut to get the cv axle out, then put on the new boots? Thanks. -Daniel

danrenfroe2016
OK, got it fixed. The really weird part. a 2007 oil drain plug fits the EA71. Cool! -Daniel
