LF Brake squeak/binding 1998 Legacy Outback limited

Recommended Posts

Hello,

On our Outback, the Left front brake is squeaking (a very high frequency), and binding enough to heat the rotor under normal driving conditions. The rotor is not out of round, and is not significantly worn. The pads were replaced a couple of years ago and don't appear unevenly worn left to right.

At first I thought this was simply air in the brake lines preventing full return of the piston. I bled all 4 wheels with Castrol GT LMA until clear. The problem seemed to go away for a couple of days, but has returned. The rotor is hot enough to sizzle water after driving, the other rotors are not hot.

I beld the brakes RR,LR,RF,LF as typical for my other vehicles. I found on this forum that I should have done RF,LR,LF,RR. I can try bleeding again. Only other thought is the caliper is binding, so I could dissassemble.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ezra

I would guess caliper. Are the inner and outer pads worn evenly (on the same wheel)? I doubt it is air in the line as your pedal would feel soft.

Thank you.

Problem fixed, it was simply rusting on the brake pad tabs preventing the pads from sliding. Thanks.
