Oil Cap problem

I recently purchased a 1993 Loyale, and one of the issues is oil splashes from under the oil filler cap and little puffs of smoke escape from under the cap.

When I tighten the cap down it turns past a tight point and then gets loose. I figure the tight point is to keep from losing the cap.

So I backed the cap up over the tight spot and the oil splash and smoke stopped and seemed to be ok for a while. Then I noticed when I was pulling a hill I had a trail of blue smoke, but what was scary was when I let off the accellerator it turned into what could be described as a forest fire going down the road. I have never seen that much smoke. So I loosened the cap since I figured I was causing the vacume to suck oil past the rings into the bore holes. The smoking stopped coming out of the exaust and returned to splashing oil and puffs of smoke out of the oil filler tube.

So can someone tell me whats going on? Is the cap defective? I wouldn't think oil is supposed to splash out at that point. By the way the oil is not overfilled.

Have you changed your PCV valve lately? Those suckers tend to get clogged up and suddenly you have way too much positive pressure in the crankcase.

 

Most of the threads on the board concerning PCV valves, encourage you to get one from the dealer. Board members have been very positive about avoiding aftermarket thermostats & PCV valves.

 

Once you've changed the valve (it's beneath the SPFI, on the winshield side), make sure all your vacuum lines are not clogged. If your vac lines are the originals, here's a good occasion to change them.....you'd be surprised how a few minor vac leaks can adversely effect performance & fuel economy.

I dont remember, but i assume this has a PCV valve, that most likely has never been changed. Start there. Also make sure all the related hoses are not caked with junk.

 

The cap, the gasket under the cap is tired. You can replace or make a gasket for it out of rubber or cork.

replace the rubber gasket under the cap and replace the PCV. i've replace the rubber gasket under the cap, it's available but i don't have any part numbers for it, i think they even come in some head gasket sets. anyway, Subaru should have it or cut your own like nipper said.

 

also - oil coming out of the oil filler tube can cause a fire, don't ask me how i know. you can ask any fire department, they're quite familiar with it. it will likely start some time after the car is turned off as that is when the outer extremities get the hottest....again, don't ask how i know.....
