Should I purchase '79 Brat? For what Price?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

these subies are addictive.. well, I guess you know that. This one fell on my lap. But, I have no idea on how to value it. What would you pay for this Brat?:

I asked a few questions, here is his reply:

80,00 original engine, bought a engine gasket kit for it for future rebuild, brakes and tires are good, it needs some exhaust work, new pipe, i have one for it!, mechanically its ok i havent driven since last summer, as i recall i was having an electrical problem with the fuel pump, but if i hook up the pump to battery it pumps? so wire ground issue? not sure its been a few months!

i have a tow bar for it as well.

I payed $200 for mine, but it was in a lot worse shape. 80k miles is a rare find.

$800 would be the lowest I would suggest, more like $1200 would be the serious offer he's looking for (at least in the NW, your millage may vary down there). They are kinda rare cars in this shape. If you can afford it, take it. Brats are the coolest thing Subaru has ever made. If you do get it and have any questions PM me, I'm in the process of squashing all the bugs in mine.

And welcome to USMB!

Keep in mind those speedos only have five places, so it could be 80K, could be 180K. Yet, 180K wouldn't scare me as EA71 rebuild kits are still out there.

If it's really as good as it looks, and there is no serious rust issues, I'd jump on it. You gotta look into the rust situation though. These brats are hard to find so how much you offer really just depends on how bad you want it. I wouldn't think $1500 would be out of the question if it is as good as it looks.

yeah what scares me in the pics is, the black painted rocker panels, sometimes a sign of cheesy body work! But if it's in decent shape, jump on it!!

Also check inside, high up on the inner wheel wells. These rust at the point where the front wheel apron, front cowl panel and the inner wheel well come together. You have pull back the vinyl covering and use a bright flashlight. Check the entire floor of the cowl.

So you live in Flag, eh? I used to live in Prescott back in '96 to 04. Anyway, I think I'd jump on that Prescott Valley brat. The price is right, and from those pictures, it looks like a solid unmolested body. Guess you wouldn't be able to run it without the gas tank. But you could always shoot some staring fluid down the carb while cranking it to fire it up for a few seconds. Thanks for the update.
