98 obw 2.5 200k wht to expect

Recommended Posts

Just got a 98 obw 2.5 5spd. Car is in pretty good condition, body is straight, interior clean runs and drives well. Has new timing belts and water pump.

Have owned a ton of old gl/ loyales, this is my first ej.

What can I do mtnce wise to keep this car on the road? Other than typical mtnce/ fluids etc what should I be paying attn to?

What, if any basic mods are going to get the best bang for buck performance, mpg, reliability wise? Thanks, Matt.

If the TB was recently done and you have proof that the HG's were done by someone that knew what they were doing I'd do a poor man's tranny flush to hopefully postpone torque bind.

Usually I buy broken cars and the HG's seem to go between 110 and 180k so I'm guessing yours have been done.

Tranny and coolant are the two most neglected things in a car.

Folks are often religous about oil changes and ignore everything else.

Thanks for the replies. I absolutely trust the mech who did the tb and hg's. So fluid change in tranny/ diff. What to use? Read some posts on redline etc. Seems a bit overkill for a dd wagon. 75-90 in both? Check the coolant, anything else?

So no gear oil pref?

How smooth is your gear shift action? If it's okay to you then whatever you prefer. I've heard good things about Valvoline Synpower.

Redline 75W90ns will make shifts buttery smooth but yeah, it's pricey. Just use it in the tranny, not the rear diff.
