Buying a 92 svx

I found a 92 svx with tranny problem for 1 grand. The tranny has all of the foward gears, but does not have reverse. Do you think the tranny should be able be able to last about 600 miles, driving from tahoe claifornia, to seattle washington? Also I want to put a 5spd in it, what year did subaru have the hydralic clutch, What would be the best tranny to buy for it? I would like a 6spd STI tranny does any one have one?

Actually the 5 speed trannies that work well with the SVX are the old 1989-1994 Legacy transmissions with the cable clutch. Hydraulic can be made to work though.

Here is one link: <a href="http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/1822.htm" target="top">http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/1822.htm</a>

And another link: <a href="http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5spdkit.htm" target="top">http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5spdkit.htm</a>

They also have a simple kit (you supply the tranny): <a href="http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5spdbkit.htm" target="top">http://www.smallcar.com/svx/5spdbkit.htm</a>

One thing to note is that Subaru switched from a 4 bolt transmission (4 bolts attaching it to the engine) to an 8 bolt model in the 1998/99 model year. You need a 4 bolt transmission, since the 3.3 H6 is a 4 bolt engine. The 8 bolt models can not be made to fit, so don't even try!!

Another thing to note, if you switch the rear diff to match the 5 speed transmissions gear ratio, you may loose the limited slip. Most SVX's have limited slip rear diffs, but most Legacy's from which you will get the tranny from do not. If you hunt for a 4.11 limited slip diff they can be found....

Thanks for the info, i found a 90 donor car to get all of the parts from.

You can switch the gear ratios from the donor car into the svx rear end and still have the lsd.
