Help Diagnose Tranny Leak

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have a 1980 subaru brat that looks to have a gear oil leak at the point where the gear shifter enters the transmission.

You can see several pictures of this leak at

Does anybody know of a way to fix this leak? I'm worried this might require opening up the transaxle.

Also, the car has quite a bit of mud, grease, etc. on the bottom. Is it okay to pressure spray? What do people recommend for cleaning this type of mess (you can see in pics)

Thanks for your help!

Micah

BUmping this question. I've done some searches and have found a few threads (listed below) that deal with this indirectly but none that address directly. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

You are talking about the selector rod seal. The seal is easy to replace.

The arm that goes *upward* and attaches to the shift lever has to be removed from the selector rod. It is held by a role pin that just get's punched out. Then the seal can be pried out of the hole with a seal puller, and a new one pressed or drifted in there. It is a small seal....should be doable by hand or with the end of an 3/8th extension.

Then pop the pin back in the arm and connect the shift rod.

The seal should on;y cost about 15-20 dollars tops.....but likely you will have to wait for it to be ordered through the dealership.

If you're local dealership won't help with parts that old.....drop me a line here....or call John and Phils Subaru in Corvallis, OR.....Ask for Brian.....and tell them Dan the Subie guy reffered you.

I degreased the tranny to see if i could get a better look at the leak. It looks like the leak is actually coming out of the transmission where the selector rod enters it.

Take a look at this pitcure and let me know if you agree.

Seems like the only way to get to a seal to stop this look would be from inside the tranny. Does anybody know if this is the case?

Thanks!

  • 2 weeks later...

I took the gear shift bracket off of the selector rod and i don't see any way of getting at a seal. There is no pin that i can see to remove the rod.

Is it possible that the rod can be unscrewed?

I'm really beginning to think that the only way to fix this is to remove the tranny and open it up.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!
