Fall Foliage Ellenville Driving Tour October 13th, 2007

Recommended Posts

Hello Historic Subaru drivers,

Some of you may be aware of the Ellenville Hill Climb Revisit and Vintage car tour that [Vintage Saab Club of North America] President Bruce Turk, RiK Rydant, and I organized back on June 9th. It was a fantastic time. A full write up with pictures can be seen on page 5 of this message board thread: http://com4.runboard.com/bamecmessageboard.f1.t28004 .

The big news is that Bruce has planned another great run through New York's Catskill mountains and is now opening it up to all of you to come join us. This is a free event, put together by Bruce for our enjoyment. No historic car is necessary this time, although we hope you will bring one if you've got one. I encourage you all to join us on this exhilarating ride through the Fall foliage on October 13th, 2007. Below is a copy of Bruce's message to his V.S.C.N.A. club membership with all of the details. We look forward to seeing you all for some twisty roads and cool suds in the mountains!

ATTENTION VSCNA MEMBERS and Guests

Lets go for a drive on October 13th 2007, rain or shine. If you want to go, be at RiK Rydant's farm at 9:30 am for complimentary coffee and donuts. Departure time is 10:30am sharp. Address is 2700 Route 209 in Marbletown NY 12440, just south of Kingston NY, (NYS Thruway Rt 87 exit 19 to 209 South). www.mapquest will get you there. We will be joined by The New York Saab Owners Club (NYSOC) and the Adirondack Motor Enthusiasts Club (AMEC) so expect a lot of interesting and varied vehicles. We will make two scheduled stops along the way, one at Berme Rd Park in Ellenville and again on the old Ellenville Hill Climb Road.

Please pre-register for this event so we have an idea what to plan for. Go to http://www.nysoc.com/ click on “sign up now” for the October 13th event, then click on “sign-up” More info on the old Ellenville Hill Climb here: http://com4.runboard.com/bamecmessageboard.f1.t28004

After our last stop on the Hill Climb road, we will proceed to New Paltz NY via some very narrow and twisty roads for lunch at the Gilded Otter Restaurant and brewery: http://www.gildedotter.com/home.htm

Total drive time: approximately 2 hours 15 minutes.

Total miles: 69

Total number of micro-brews available at the Gilded Otter: 8

As always, non-VSCNA members and their families are welcome. You don't even need a Saab! Please remember you never need an invitation to attend a VSCNA event, so bring along some friends and enjoy the drive.

We will divide into two groups, one "slower and scenic" and one faster.... Please bring FRS radios if you have them! Arrive with a full tank of gas. Also see attached route instructions. I suggest you print a color copy and bring it with you. Black and white copies will be available at Rik's farm.

The route will take us through an incredible array of roads and terrain. Here is a brief description of the route:

Through historic Stone Ridge and past many Revolutionary War era homes.

Over the Mohonk ridge near New Paltz, past the best rock climbing and repelling areas in the Northeast.

Down the Shawangunk ridge on Tow Path road, literally driving through the ultra creepy and still functioning Eastern NY Correctional Facility, a castle-like, turn of the century maximum-security prison. http://www.correctionhistory.org/easternny100/opener.html

Back up the ridge on the now defunct and infamous Ellenville Hill Climb road, then across the mountaintop on Gully road, through Historic Cragsmoor and down the ridiculously narrow and steep Vista Maria.

Then just a whole slew of narrow twisty back roads to New Paltz.

Be there or be square.

Best regards,

Bruce Turk

President V.S.C.N.A.
