shifter headache!!!

I have a '96 impreza coupe. 1.8 5spd. I made the mistake of ordering a short shifter from kartboy for a 97-01 impreza by mistake. Needless to say the shifter setup is compltely differentA! Rather then sending it back and paying 15% restocking fee, I decided to buy all new parts from a 97+ 5spd.

 

Iv'e ordered the trans rod so I can matt that with the newer short shifter and ive ordered the bushing that goes at the bottom of the short shifter from a 2002, I was told it's the same from 97+.

 

The shifter bushing does not work in my factory shifter rod, If I order a shifter rod out of a newer impreza, would this work with the new bushing and short shifter?

 

I could have saved money & time by ordering a complete impreza short shifter fully assembled for $240.

Yeah, seems like you fucked up pretty bad there :) ahwel thats the way things go. If I were you, I would cut your losses, pay the restocking fee, and take this as a lesson to get the right part first. Sort of the "measure twice, cut once" philosophy, saves you a lot of wasted cash and effort.

PS: Just wondering, why do you need a short shifter? No offence but the EJ18 doesn't seem like the ideal performance engine...

 

Do you just like the feel of a short shift or do you have a performance engine going in at some time?

Well I do like the feel of the short shift, I also know the ej18 engine is to say the least a gasemeizer engine & not a fast & furious version. I did plan to transplant either a rs 2.5 engine or the 2.0 turbo engine. I'm going to keep the short shifter wether things work or not, I service & sell subaru's so there's bound to be another subaru I can use the shifter in.

If I were going with a EJ20G or EJ205 I would definitely use the gearbox and clutches that came with them. They're a pull type hydraulic clutch, not the push type used with non-turbo EJs. I've seen a 89 RS engine (single turbo EJ20) destroy several clutches and finally the gearbox in an EJ Dual-Range gearbox setup. No dumped clutches either, just too much power and torque.
