Current Sit Rep: Gifted 84" GL 4Dr Hatch 4WD High Low Super Clean Blown Head Gasket warped Head. Not Subaru Saveey. I Have built a Car or two in me Day (YJ, AE86, Volvo 240/350 swap, 76' Fiat 124.) The research I've done points in the general Direction that Subaru's more/ most reliable engines have been built in the last ten years. the 80's were fun but not the best.

 

A side from the fact that the EJ Does not fit in the average 84'GL is this the most or one of the most reliable motors? Or what is?

I' like working on engines But Head gaskets every 75,000 is a little....

Hi Rich This is Jerry, i have a 85 hatch that is the same engine compartment as your wagon has and i have a 93 impreza 1.8 engine in it fits without any cutting. Want to know more let me know. Thanks Jerry

Its certainly a solid engine. It shouldn't have a blown head gasket but its still possible.

Its certainly doable to deck the heads flat, put new head gaskets on and be done with it for a very long time. Fix the cause of course.
