Charging system issues EJ20H swap

Featured Replies

Hey guys the show is just about here and i have run into an issue on the brat for some reason i am not getting a charge from the alt. i had it tested and it passed, but when you remove one of the battery cables the engine just dies.it has grounds from engine to battery and battery to car but still just dies.

Specs.

EJ20H Auto 4eat AWD

The harness is the complete Legacy harness that came with the engine/Trans

ANY info would really help it going to be cutting it close getting her to the show this year.

Cheers R.

Some of the stock ECU setups have the Main power for the harness connected to the field wire of the Alt. It uses this for "self shutoff control"

I have never looked at a EJ20H harness/ECU so I don't know if it's the same but........

On the Early EJ22 harnesses it is hte yellow wire off the alt that connects to the main IG. switched power for the harness (igniter, Coil, solenoids, etc..)

If you have that yellow wire from harness hooked to a battery source, and not tied in with the ALT. That could be it. Not sure, just a guess.

But when I do swaps, I always Excite the alt using the same switched circuit as the harness power.

Ok so i tried running a jumper from the Pos side of the battery to the smaller of the two wires on the plug (a black with white stripe) and nothing then the other (a larger white wire) and nothing. unplugged it and tested with the multimeter on both polls still nothing. Then the main wire on the top of the alt that goes to the battery it showed 11 volts being just the battery. think i could just have a bad alt? i tested it it autozone but i have had alt test ok before and do the same. i do have a known good early legacy alts i can swap a plug on and try it.

On a side note I need to hook up the VSS of the cluster to the ECM so i stop getting cut off when driving can anyone tell me what wire it is for sure coming off the cluster? and what wire or plin on the cluster is for the tach so i can run the ECM tach wire to it. I know "hook it to the old coil wire... thats all long gone im going off the back of the cluster now.

Any help is good help sorry for the typos and run ons just tired.

Cheers Cherrs R.
