October 26, 201312 yr Found this forum threw Google. I got my Outback from the Auto salvage yard I work for. It was going to be crushed. It seemed to run just fine at first but started to have head gasket problems. I pulled the engine and did the head gaskets in my spare time. The car has 267,000 miles but the engine still had a very strong cross hatch in the cylinders. It seems that it has had a rebuilt engine installed. The engine had the timing belt guide that was only used on the manual trans cars. Mines an auto trans. Thanks for the forum help Shawn.
October 26, 201312 yr I can attest to you that the crosshatches are most likely the original engine and wear. Crosshatches never wear out, and rebuilding a block is never necessary unless there is an obvious bottom end knock, ehre it is more economical to source a used block instead of a rebuild. You can get 400,000 miles out of that block if you take care of it, which it look like you are on the road towards! Keep us updated as i love stories of cars rescued from junk to live on for many years and miles. side note- That timing belt tensioner can be converted to one style or the other simply by switching the bracket that it mounts to. October 26, 201312 yr Author I was talking about the guide thing in the pic. I was told that they didn't use them on auto trans engines. Wish the engine was the single cam one. The DOHC is kinda a pain in the rump roast with the valve shims.
October 26, 201312 yr Author Spent a little time looking around on the forum and I like this place. I really like the section for old Subaru's. Some I've never seen before and some I haven't seen in person for a very long time.
October 27, 201312 yr Consider ej22e heads (f you got them) SOHC for a little compression bump1990-95. You would have to use the ej22 intake but it matches the wiring harness.
October 27, 201312 yr Author I can get my hands on the single cam heads but will I have to run 93 gas ?
October 27, 201312 yr You will have to run higher octane fuel. You can priobably get b on lower octane or middle octane, but the ECU will pull timing so it could be doggy under load. It's a common upgrade to get out of the issues associated with the ej25d
October 27, 201312 yr Author Thanks for that great info. The only down side for me is that I won't be able to use the free gas at my work .
October 27, 201312 yr Thanks for that great info. The only down side for me is that I won't be able to use the free gas at my work . You could add a can of octane boost. I frankenswapped my forester after it had a full tank, so i used octane boost to run it out. (for some reason i thought you were in australia, thinking your car was RHD)
October 27, 201312 yr Author I'm in the US but it would be cool to have a RHD car here. I've read some on here that the single cam heads fix the head gasket problem. I thought using a MLS head gasket on the DOHC takes care of that problem. There seems to better knowledge on this forum then on some of the other forums.
