Dakotademon7 Posted October 26, 2013 Share Posted October 26, 2013 Found this forum threw Google. I got my Outback from the Auto salvage yard I work for. It was going to be crushed. It seemed to run just fine at first but started to have head gasket problems. I pulled the engine and did the head gaskets in my spare time. The car has 267,000 miles but the engine still had a very strong cross hatch in the cylinders. It seems that it has had a rebuilt engine installed. MilesFox Posted October 26, 2013 Share Posted October 26, 2013 (edited) I can attest to you that the crosshatches are most likely the original engine and wear. Crosshatches never wear out, and rebuilding a block is never necessary unless there is an obvious bottom end knock, ehre it is more economical to source a used block instead of a rebuild. You can get 400,000 miles out of that block if you take care of it, which it look like you are on the road towards! Keep us updated as i love stories of cars rescued from junk to live on for many years and miles. side note- That timing belt tensioner can be converted to one style or the other simply by switching the bracket that it mounts to. You can priobably get b on lower octane or middle octane, but the ECU will pull timing so it could be doggy under load. You could add a can of octane boost. I frankenswapped my forester after it had a full tank, so i used octane boost to run it out. I've read some on here that the single cam heads fix the head gasket problem. I thought using a MLS head gasket on the DOHC takes care of that problem.
