Car heat gauge goes to normal but blows cold air, upper hose looks like it has been sucked in, where is the t-stat located in a 1999 Outback legacy wagon?

Welcome to the USMB.

 

The t-stat is located on the bottom side of the engine. where the lower radiator hose attaches. I would also check the radiator cap as it sounds like it may not be allowing the coolant from the expansion bottle to be sucked back in when the coolant contracts.
