I just got a 97 legacy awd wagon with a bad trans. instead of fixing/putting another auto trans in, i was thinking of dumping in a manual trans instead. which trans will fit (year/model)? this is the first subura i've owned and have no idea which trans/engine will fit this chassis.

Any EJ series transmission will bolt up to your engine. So, basically, any transmission from a Subaru made from 1990 to 1999. You can also get trans from Legacies from 1990 to current and Imprezas from 1994 to current. As long as the donor car's engine name has EJ in it.

 

Common swaps: 5MT's from Legacies and Impreza's. 6MT's from new WRX STi's (but these are really expensive).

 

A swap will probably run you in the 2000 dollar range assuming you have someone do it for you. Parts could be pretty cheap depending on your source.
