What's the kit or size I need please? car is 87 EA82 carb. EDIT NAPA doesn't have the 12x1.25 in their book. Should I just go the next size up? Guest tomrhere Posted August 14, 2003 Share Posted August 14, 2003 Another option that I used on my engine, is to use a 7/16"X14 tap in the bolt holes. Screws right in, no pre-drilling required. I followed the starter tap with a bottoming tap, just to get those few extra threads. I'm a firm believer in coarse threads in aluminum, vs fine thread, as there's more meat to grab hold of, and less chance of strippage. Thinking it was archemetis(sp), that mentioned using this size of bolt awhile back, when I posted of stripping out one of the holes. I liked the idea, and went with it. I tried to buy a tap for it to re-do my shifter for my short shift conversion... but no dice... (its the same as the shift knob actually) (I actually found the ONLY place in town that had one was a motorcycle shop.. paid em $5 to thread my shifter linkage... So taps and dies will be HARD TO FIND and expensive. going up to the next size may really be simpler and cheaper... just enlarge the holes in the Y pipe a bit. Just a bit coarser thread is all. If you have a real parts store around, they usually have the oddball helicoil kits. Like All Pro, or a locally owned shop. Guest MilesFox Posted August 15, 2003 Share Posted August 15, 2003 i have seen a motor with big ol' fat almost lag bolts holding the pipe on. like almost bigger than 1/2 in. diameter. all my experiences with stripped out holes was due to not having the flange end of the y pipe securely mounted to what was supposed to be a mount off the back of the tranny. them bolts trying to hold all the weight off the head alone is hell on the threads!
