Due to the difficulty of finding hard data on sales of the Brats for my fight with the insurance company, I started keeping hard copy evidence of every sale for all the gen2 Brats that I could find. Ebay stuff is nice since it shows a final price, but craigslist and other sources always show the asking price and I never know if it really sold for that price or what price it actually sold for. If you sell a Brat (or know somewhat who did) could you please send me an email with year, VIN#, miles, general condition, actual selling price, location (state or province is enough unless you want to add the city), and the date of sale. Add a link to ebay, craigslist or other o…

I put in a newer motor a while back and was wondering what year a car it came out of. It's a EA81 and the ID says 583264. Is there any way of finding out what year it is from this number? Thanks!

So randomly, one day, I go to drive the wagon and then I brake coming up to a stoplight, and the front passenger wheel is making a grinding noise as the wheel turns it get stronger almost like there's a high spot on the rotor, then it locks up here and there, but the rotors and pads are new - less than 250 miles on them - and brakes have been bled

First joined this forum 20 years ago when I had an 84 hatch that I had bought sitting in a field while I was in high school. At the time, I had a 91 Legacy. Drove that till it blew up and then picked up an 83 Brat that I found for sale on here and picked up another 83 for parts. Had a 2000 RS coupe in college, then a 95 Outback beater. Sold the RS and got an 05 STi, sold it in 2016 and got back into an 04 WRX in 2022. Picked up this 84 GL 2 weeks ago as if I needed another project but I am not poor on vehicles - also have a 2019 Tundra and 2015 Rav4. This thing was in surprisingly good shape for being an east TN car. With that, it does have its issues. I have on my w…

Hi all! Just recently purchased a 1982 brat with a ea18 in it. It came with a 2bbl webber carb but it doesn't line up with the intake and I can't seem to find any other ea18 that has an intake that looks like mine. Trying to source a stock one as I think the intakes has been swapped but was hoping someone here would have some insight on what might have been on the car previously as I don't have the old carb. Bare with me this is my first sooby, I'm used to Honda and vw's haha. Thanks!

EA82, SPFI, 5MT D/R. My engine runs *okay* and can do short back an fourths to work alright. However, it has a misfire. The entire throttle body (injector, TPS, and regulator included) is a "good used" part. My fuel pump is also noisy and I have no idea when it was last replaced. TPS is properly setup. Used the 2 feeler gauges. Once I've been driving for a while, sometimes it'll run like a top. Buttery smooth. Other times it idles rough. It doesn't buck the car side to side but it does vibrate. A noticable gas smell comes from the driver side and the plug for cylinder #4 has more carbon buildup. I've had the engine stall 3 times after coasting …

I've searched the forum extensively but haven't found anyone with this particular issue. This '91 Loyale has been sitting for about two years. It was running fine prior to its long rest but now that the battery has been replaced and its up and running again, the following issues have cropped up: Turn signals don't turn on Hazards don't turn on Dash turn arrow indicators do not illuminate when flashers ought to be on The flasher relay is not clicking The 'Stop Lamp' dash light is lit (but brake lights and headlights are fine) Horn doesn't work Here is what I've done to try to solve the problem: replaced flasher relay (no …

Hello all! I bought a Brat a couple years back and she has been really good to me, except one of the previous owners installed an aftermarket turbo with a sidedraft Carter YH carb off an old corvair (it was a pretty cool setup). I however, live in California, and am trying to get it to pass smog. I am bringing it back to stock, and have it running with the Carter-Weber. The line marked in the first picture was originally running as a feed line for the turbo. I am planning on removing it and just installing a plug, but I am not sure what the stock condition was. The factory service manual is not immediately clear, Picture 3 shows a pressure switch installed…

'89 GL SPFI 5DRMT. When I have to rapidly decelerate, for instance when a light turns yellow or I get cut off, when I get to a crawling pace or a complete stop my idle is very poor. It'll dip down to 250 RPM and my vacuum will flutter wildly within a 5-8 inHg range. If I give it a little throttle and hold it slightly above idle RPM for a few seconds it quickly subsides. I have no issue with throttle response when I'm having these idle issues. The engine responds to very slight throttle input. It starts cold just fine unless the car was sitting outside overnight in subzero temps, then getting it started can take a few minutes and words of affirmation. Any i…

This car is in a garage, driven a couple times per week. Suddenly, yesterday while driving, - Runs rough. Idle, dies. Idle in N dies. I did manage to drive it home, Seemed to run ok down the road, not acting like starved for fuel. In N, press the gas and hold, the RPM goes up, [example 2500]. Then after a second or 2 drops about 500, and the roughness returns. Does this regardless of what RPM you get initially - goes up, then drops back. Does this hot or cold. Capped the vacuum tap on the passenger side, no effect. This eliminates EGR, Evap, HVAC controls as possible culprits. Capped the vacuum tap for the brake booster, no effect. Distributo…

I've been searching for a new SPFI injector to have on hand when the the pearly gates come calling for my limited stock of used injectors. MPFI injectors are a dime a dozen but new SPFI injectors are more difficult to track down. The only actual new parts I can find are compatible with the Subaru P/N 16637AA000. However this only seems to be compatible with 1986 and maybe 1987 models. My car is an '89 model which calls for the P/N 16637AA010. Is there really any difference between the two? It doesn't list 16637AA010 as a supersession part number. But I'd have a hard time believing that Subaru would have one injector only work with a 1-2 year model range. That do…

There's been several threads lately about options for front struts, now that they're entirely unavailable in the US. With one of mine getting really wobbly, and my springs so flat that I've been sitting solid on the front bump stops (and ruining tires with the resultant camber) for the last year, I decided it was time to really look into my options for new parts. It turns out that ordering from Australia is a lot easier than I expected! This post will mostly focus on Gen II parts, since that's what I drive, but the info in it applies to all vehicles and anything else you want to order. I've looked in the past, and even emailed several places, both ebay sellers and…

So, theres a lot of levels to this, being that i intend to make this car outlast me so ill try to keep this organized First and foremost, I both want and need to replace, revamp, or otherwise retrofit most of my undercarriage, while its served perfectly as my daily driver, I can feel and hear that my tie rods are bad, ball joints too I'm sure, my power steering works most of the time but id like to do whatever is best to get it at maximum capability again, idk what CV Axles or how to figure out certain part specifics like that so please explain it to me like I'm a child should you do so. I'd also like to swap it to coilovers for now, please drop me some specific…

I can find the rear struts easy on places like rockauto, o'reilly's and other sites. But I can not find any front ones. My friend says it's possible I have DL front suspension or are they the same? If anyone has 2 spare shocks for sale or knows where to find a front left and right struts please let me know I need to replace them ASAP.

Someone in another thread recently said they couldn't find the right driver for installing front wheel seals, so here's the random find I've been using for Gen II seals, a HyperTough 64P-14 oil filter socket, with the outside very slightly filed for a looser fit in the knuckle.

Hello people. Long time, no problems with the old GL. Can I take the play out of front wheel bearings on my '88 GL by tightening the axle nut? Is that what that sleeve inside the hub is for? For the bearing to tighten against? Bearings were replaced ten years ago..

Prepare your thinking caps. I've recently done a full rebuild (minus bottom end) of an SPFI EA82 and full reconditioning of the engine bay. The engine and manifold are a bit of a Frankenstein but both the engine ran, and all of the electronics (dizzy, throttle body, ECU, maf sensor, etc) came from a running engine. Air: I just redid the head gaskets (that's why I'm trying to start this thing up and clearly failing) the heads were fully reconditioned (valves and seats ground, new valve seals, new guides, new lifters, head resurfaced). Deck was meticulously cleaned. All new seals on the throttle body. All new hoses everywhere of the proper metric sizes. It d…

Most of it is for the Sedan but I'd love some scans of the Leone Estate/ GL Wagon. Here are some of the highest I could find myself. Also have some scans of EA82 manuals and some cute paper craft of the Justy I found.

Hello, I am trying to save a 1983 Subaru GL 4 door that was recently hit in the driver side rear door. Car has 137,000+ miles, 5 speed, FWD, is super clean (no rust). The driver side rear door took the brunt of the impact so not really repairable at this time. We would like to save the car if possible but the insurance company of course would like to total. Does anyone have a driver side rear door shell for sell? Thanks!

I've decided to part out my '82 GL 4WD. Its been sitting in the back yard (in Central Texas) for 10+ years and the interior and exterior are both pretty rough -- but there may be some parts you need that are in decent/working condition. It's got an EA-81 engine with ~260,000 miles; both the interior and exterior are blue. That is a custom-made Class 3 (2" square) hitch on the back. I have additional spare parts for the vehicle including extra wheels and cylinder heads. I'm keeping the cyclops light but everything else is available. Let me know what you need and we'll see if we can work something out. Thanks- 82baru

'89 GL wagon Last winter we had a cold snap and some component of my power lock system froze. When I unlocked the car in the morning, I heard something break inside the door and my power locks stopped working since. The locks still work as manual locks. The door lock light on the dash recognizes every lock except the driver door. So I took all the driver door lock components out and nothing seems broken. The plastic pieces are intact and the mechanism functions smoothly. I replaced the door lock actuator (unknown condition of the actuator, I didn't pull the part myself) and nothing. No difference. *Edit: I just checked the terminals of the driver door actu…

Just thought I'd share a vid we made about failing the CARB legal engine swap. - we go over the carb process, why we failed, and future options.. Basically, the 83-87 Brats are "trucks" and 81-82 are "passenger cars." And ej22s only came in passenger cars. We're down but not out! Open to suggestions!
