Brat bed fixing....

I've got a Brat that is rust free, except for the bed, where someone replaced the stock breathable carpet with some solid backed carpet that held the water in. so I've got a hole the size of a basketball in the floor near the tailgate, and other bad spots along the rear area. I also have a small hole through the floor over top of the gas tank area, and other rough areas throughout the floor only of the bed.

the very rear of the bed may be taken care of through "bobbing" it like Zap did, but the other areas, I would like to fix/cover, etc...

this brat is gonna be my main off-roader when it's done.
I have the gas tank out right now as it needed replaced...

I am contemplating drilling several "drain holes" in the bed, and putting a wood bed in...

had also thought about putting diamond plate aluminum in, but it's kind of pricey.....

another thought is to just clean up the spots, put rust converter/POR-15 on em, then rivet steel in over the spots, and get it Rhino lined....

any thoughts....?

Hey Mick,
For some reason I want to like the diamond plate firstoff. I don't like the wood bed unless you do it like old american iron trucks with the metal bed strips between the wood, rather than a cut plywood sheet. Finally, it seems the best idea of all is the rust treatment plus sheetmetal. Takes care of the problem of rust (except for your location in the US) for now and who knows if you did the DIY bedliner you might not even notice the patch spots. Add in a spare tire holder or other functional yet disguising feature (gas can holder, keg-o-rator) and noone notices. Plus, it's your offoroader soooooo...

What I am doing on my brat.... Eric is bobbing the arse for me and I am using that metal to repair the frontal metal damage (afew holes, but he 12 inch bob should cover it)

well, I think I'm leaning toward just patching in some sheetmetal.... for the wood floor, it would have been planked....

I do have a spare tire holder :) to incorporate.

for the rollbar, I'm going to chop up/modify 2 Gen1 rollbars, so I can save my 2 Gen2 bars for my other Brats :)

I would think that you could take another piece of bed and weld it in, in that section. Then I would probably Rhino line it as if you don't it will want to break apart.

but getting another piece of bed is the hard part... even the turbo brat that Shawn just parted out, the bed was beatup pretty good.....

will maybe do a little patching tonight so I can get the new gas tank in soon....

Don't be scared...wire feed a new piece of 20 guage in, tacking every inch or so unless you can Mig it, then seal up the whole thing.

Mcbrat, I would go with tacking in new sheet metal and then apllying Road Warrior two part epoxy over it. It's made by Rust Oleium, I bought mine online through Sportsman Guide. Used Duplicolor on the Brat but even after redoing it a second time I still am not satisfied with it, put the Road Warrior in my 2000 F-150 about 3 months ago and it looks great, Has ground up rubber in it for none slip surface and has a wet shiny look. It also is thick. Glenn Taylor.
