Diesel conversion

I have found a free deutz two cylinder air cooled diesel engine. It is mine just as soon as I can go and get it.Currently it is hooked up to a generator head but it isnt a fixed RPM engine. It has a cable throttle that can adjust it from 900-3000 RPM.So I was thinking of experimenting abit and putting it in my subaru offroad toy.Yea the engine only has about 35 HP and like 65 lbs torque(off idle baby). So it will most likely be a bit of downgrade, but it will be free to run so that will be worth it.That and the two cylinder diesel weighs 341 lbs.. But I do get rid of the cooling system and its problems.

So right now the plan is to mate the engine to the subaru transaxle and put an electric fan where the radiator would normally be.Then have an expanded metal grill so that debris dont find there way into the fan. Then just have the fan on when vehicle speed is low.The diesel has a crank pully and mounts for an alternator so I will just blot the alternator on and have power for lights and stuff. That and find a vacuum pump driven of the crank to have power brakes. It should go about 50-55 flat out.

Right now I am wondering about the fuel lines. The fuel pump for the engine is on the block/injection pump will I need to change out the fuel lines to the tank?

You will most likely need a small electric lift pump so that the fuel gets from the tank to the injection pump. Once the system is primed at the injection pump, the lift pump really isnt needed. but leaving it running can reduce the amount of wear and tear on the injection pump, since those are the most expensive.

damn.I went and picked the engine up.it seems i was lied to it isnt a deutz, its an ONAN engine.looks to be rated at 18 HP instead of 35.which maybe a problem. It might make it unbearably slow to drive, but no telling with the massive torque off idle to get things rolling.it is to dark right now to take pictures.I will snap a couple and take a closer look at it tommarow. Its free because someone tried to change a glowplug and broke it.So I will need to pull the head and figure out the best way to remove the glow plug...

here is some pics of the beast.I have no idea what model it is or how much horsepower it has,but I will try to get it to work.I will remove the fan that is attached to that and figure out a way to mount a flywheel to that end then have an electric fan to cool it when stationary.I will also modify the exhaust to mate up with the subaru exhaust.Although just looking at it,it might be to tall to fit UNDER the hood...I suppose it could stick out 4-5" out of the hood and I wouldnt care...It might cool better..
