I have the dreaded head gasket leak in my 2.5. Since it has 135000 miles on it, my local garage will not touch the job and I do not have the time. Since the 2.5s have the problem, I thought about replacing it with a used SOHC. Then I heard that the SOHCs have problems as well and that it isn't a straight swap anyway. Is there a newer engine that does not leak and that will fit in my 98? I hate to give the car to the junk yard. Thanks,

In looking at the postings, Subarus have a lot of problems with engines and transmissions after they reach 100K. Are the 2003 and up more reliable? I am used to Toyotas that normally last 200k without problems. Ray

My 98 Outback has about 135K on it and apparently is due an engine oil leak and a head gasket repair. I am also noticing a shudder when making sharp (like U) turns. One person with a 96 wrote in and was advised about a clutch pack wearing out a housing. do the 98's have the same problem? Ray
