  1. I am looking into getting a tent trailer for the family...I have a Subaru Legacy 2004 Wagon, A/T...I live in cali so most of the interstates are flat but there are some decent grades to head into the mountains. I think the towing cap. is 2000# but is that realistic, shoul I be looking for a lighter trailer....any experience/wisdom/knowledge would be great on towing a tent trailer and what the weight of it was!

  2. THe prices for the 2004's will drop when the 2005's come out because it is a redesign. We bought a 2004 through costco and got the best price, 20 grand for the 35th anniversary edition...we love the car and hope they fixed the head gasket issues. I think we will be safe, only time will tell though. Unless you get the outback with the H-6, even with the 2005's you may run the risk of the head gasket failure.

  3. I bought a 2004 Legacy Wagon 35 edition last October. We also purchased the extended warranty through our Credit Union for 600 bucks, covers up to 6 years or 100,000 miles. So far we love the car, obviously to early to tell if we will have problems with the gasket. From the research I did before we bought they have supposedly fixed the gasket...now it is a 4 layer deal instead of the two layer the Phase I got. If we do have problems, i sure hope it fails before our warranty...if it fails after the car will be paid off at least. I think you are right on in regards to initial cost vs. extended cost. If you really like the Legacy, go for it, get the warranty to cover yourself while you are paying for the car and save the extra 6 grand.

  4. I live in Fresno too..I have a 2004 Legacy wagon.

I use 87 octane in the H-4...seems to do well, burned a higher octane once and performance/mileage increased a bit to.

I use 10W-30 here in the valley...fine so far, also what the dealer/manual recommended.

As for the vibration, it could be the flat engine...it is a bit different from other cars...if you are really worried go to a credit union and buy the extended warranty...could be worth it.

I haven't needed to put chains on in the hills above us here, that includes shaver and Kings canyon. I was up in shaver right after christmas with those huge storms, car did great, no chains were needed for me and they let me drive on by and I plowed through snow banks to get into the driveway. For a legacy you can put chains on the front...outbacks chains aren't advised. If you are going to do a ton winter driving get some snow tires...we go up on the weekends and are fine with the stock tires, just an all season.

Also, I think there is some warranty work you are eligible for having to do with the head gasket...call up Herwaldt Subaru and ask them...it is a recall or something. Other people on this board know more than me on that.

    Have fun!

  5. Bought an O4' Legacy Special Edition in October. I haven't noticed the tranny making noises...it isn't super smooth but is more than tolerable. We love the car, my wife even said there wasn't one thing she would change about it! We debated between the manual and automatic pretty hard, went with the auto because my wife had trouble pushing in the clutch. It is a great car!

On another note, the subaru extended warranty is way over priced, got one through our credit union for half the price and we can choose the mechanic.

    Good luck!
