  1. I read your post about replacing the speedo gear w/o pulling the tranny. I have a 90 Legacy 4EAT with stripped gear(s) following seizure and breakage of the little cable drive unit that screws into the top of the case. I want to be sure I follow what you were suggesting: I am thinking that the outer diff bearing race will simply come out once the ring nut is removed (following careful measurements as you suggested). I am thinking that it may just the smaller driven gear that is bad (just wishful thinking, maybe). You mention having to pull the diff bearing off the carrier, and I am wondering how you did that, i.e., with a special puller, or is it held on by a circlip? I am guessing that, even just to do the smaller driven gear, that bearing has to be out of the way. It would be cool if I could fix my car w/o pulling the tranny. Without the speedometer cable input, I think the AWD is engaged all the time. Thanks for any insights you might be willing to share! Les
