  1. So it very much could be the tranny... I'll have to look on my day off.... I just bought a jack and jack stands.
  2. K.. this is where I am at... My friend that has the hoist is out of town working in Florida. But I jacked up the car and grabbed the driveline and it had no play in it. (tried to move it up and down. side to side. back and forth.) The sound does increase with speed but I don't want to drive it the way it is. The tranny fluid is a dark red in color and contains no metal shavings in it. The passenger side axle was replaced 2 weeks before the noise appeared. The drivers side axle was replaced less then a year ago. When I did have it on the hoist we removed the passenger side axle and ran it. and then removed the drivers side axle and ran it. But the noise still presist. We put the fuse in to make it front wheel drive and held the rear tires while the car was in drive and the noise was still there... All I can think of is that something broke in the differential and not in the tranny section. If I am not mistaken that the differential is bolted to the rear of the tranny just before the input shaft from the driveline... Hope this sheds some more light on my problem
  3. I have had it on a hoist and it mad the same sound in the air. We removed the front passenger axle and held the dirvers side wheel and it still made the same sound. It also made the same sound by holding both rear tires when the fuse was put in to disengage the 4wd to the rear.... I know the guy that I bought it from also my mechanic told me that when the tranny would go out it will make a howling sound. But I get a clunking sound. Plus I can go forward and in reverse so I still have power in the tranny and the fluid is at level.
  4. I have a 91 legacy wagon 4wd with automatic tranny. My problem is that it was making a bad CV joint sound. So I replaced both front axles. But now the sound is still there but worse. It now makes a sound when you move it forward or backward only a foot. It almost sounds like a busted driveline/u-joint but I had it up on a lift and there is no sign of anything broken. I also drained some tranny fluid out to look for any metal filings but none were found. I am stumped... I would hate to spend a fortune on a new tranny if that isint the problem to begin with. Or if there is anyone in the longview area of washington with a 90-93 Legacy 4wd parts car for cheap... Cause I am at wits end with this one... I just dont want to get rid of it cause I have a lot of money invested into the sound system and the motor is still running strong. Thanks in advance for your help.
