Hi guys,
this is obviously my first post here. I used to have a 1996 1.8 litre Legacy, but sold it a couple of years ago. My daughter has, on my advice, bought a Legacy six month ago.
Yesterday the car made a horrible noise as she came down the drive. On closer inspection I could see some fine metal shavings around the belt tensioner pulley. After removing the belts and the tensioner, the problem became more obvious. The cam belt had been trying to eat its way throught the plastic cover. In fact, the cover seems to be the only thing that's holding it on.
Is this engine an interference engine? My 1.8 wasn't. Does it have two belts? Only the right side seems to be affected. The belt seems very loose and I am guessing that the tensioner has self destructed. I would appreciate any suggestions.
Is it very difficult to get to the belt? Obviously the cooling fans and the crank pulley need to come off.
Thanks in advance
