  1. Here is my original post from a couple weeks ago. Many of you where nice to offer your suggestions. Today I finally figured it out and boy my tush was warm. I'll go over how I did it so that anyone else can give it a try if they want. However I'm no electician or mechanic so try this at your own risk.

     

    "Hi I just replaced my old seats with leather outback limited seats. They have seat warmers but unfortunatly nothing exists to plug them inot in my legacy l wagon. Is there a way to make this work or is the electical for the seat heaters part of the wiring harness. Thanks."

     

    Well first if you want seat heaters your going to need to find some outback seats that have the heater elements and wiring in them. I found some leather outback limited seats for my legacy out at a junk yard for a good price. I think any seats fro 95 to 99 will work with cars from those years.

     

    Next you need to find and pull the relay switches from the center console and the wiring that goes with them. Theres a lot of wiring and I was lucky enough to be able to pull apart the car whose seats I took. I wish I had a picture to post if anyone wants i can give them a diagram of what they'll be looking for. For now I'l explain the best I can.

     

    There are four wires going to each relay switch. They are tan, yellow with green stripe, blue, and black. Here is what each wire does. The blue is your positive lead, the black is your ground. It took me a while to figure out the tan a yellow green. However it finally dawned on me that these two wires control the back light of the relay switches and tie into the dimmer switch.

     

    So here is how it all came together. I ran wires to the cigar lighter for my positive and negative Then I tied the yellow green and tan wires into the wires feeding the ilumitation bulb in the automatic shifter console " sorry I don't know how you'd do this with a stick". After I taped it all up and doublechecked all my conections I ran the wires to under the seats " note that you have to pull the whole center console out and the front seats as well in order to do this job". I plugged the seats in turned on the car fliped the seat heater relay switch and voila a heated rump.

     

    I don't know how well this is going to read so please if you have any questions ask away. I just wanted to let my fellow legacy L brethren know that they to can now have heated bums.

  2. the switches are located in the center console behind the e brake...

    a wiper warmer switch

    then the seat heat switches

    (yes, high & low)

    so remove that lovely plastic thing for change & the cd/tape holder box...

    the wire harness should be under that.

    I would consider a wrecking yard for an abandoned center console with the switches intact.

    Thanks pete. I was given the switches with the seats. Now I guess I frankenstien together some wiring. I'm suprised that no one else has done this. I'll post my experience.

  3. I have had 2 95's with the 2.2 motor and just bought a 96 OB with a know HG issue.

     

    Once repaired with the new HG kit, it is my opinion that the 96 will be fine for quite some time. It had 152 K on the motor when it went bad.

     

    The 2.2 is a more reliable motor, that is a fact. If I were in your shoes, I would find a decent 95 or 96 2.2 Legacy sedan or wagon and ride of into the sunset.:banana:

    I agree with everyone on the 2.2 liter issue. I did a lot of research before I bought my legacy and the 2.5 head gasket issue was a big turn off for me. I also suggest that you tear out the legay seats and replace them with some outback seats. I put leather in mine. Very comfy. I hate hate hate subaru's legacy cloth seats. Good luck.

  4. Yes there are very few things in a sooby that have thier own harness. See if you can go back to the donor car or another car with heated seats and grab the console switches. They usually go in the little pocket for coins, or in a switch blank. Look under the seats. and i hate you for having working seat heaters...

    the seat heaters where an option for the 97 however i did look for wiring and couldn't find any. However there are a few "male terminals?" That have no female terminals plugged into them. I'm assuming "hoping really" that the wiring for the seats plugs into one of these "terminals". I ca't even find a wiring diagram for the seat heaters anywhere. So I guess the only thing to do is go back to the car I got the seats from an follow the wiring. Nipper don't envy me until the electicity starts to flow. Thanks

  5. Hi I have a rear wiper thats out. I've tested the motor and its fine. I've tested the switch and it's fine. I've checked out the wires going throught the rear door and they aren't busted. The last thing I can think to check is the relay. Where is it? I can't seem to track it down and it seems they've moved it around a lot depending on what year, make, or model you have. So I have a 1997 legacy L wagon. Thanks to anyone who knows where subaru stashed it.

  6. Here we go...

    There is an illumination control module that is the amplifier i was talking about.

    I would test the stalk by removing the trim on the steering column, dsiconnecting the harness that leads to it (do NOT touch anything if in doubt..as the air bag wiring is stuffed in there too). Airbag wiring is wrapped in colored tape so leave that alone.

    You have blue/red blk/red brwn/red coming from that rehostate. Using an analog meter, there shold be no opens and values should change as the dimmer is rotated. If that all works out its the illumination control module.

    Ok I went out to test the dimmer. I unplugged the illumination mod and tested the wires there. Between the blue/red and blk/red I metered values changing from 1. when the dimmer was in the lowest setting to .04 when the dimmer was in the highest setting. So I'm assuming that the dimmer is still good. I changed out the illumination control mod and the problem persists. So I'm thinking that it's not the illumination mod. Something thats always puzzled me is how the clock radio light is "on" if the lights are turned to the off possition and then it goes out one you switch on the lights.

    Also no matter where I touched the red brown wire to I always got a value of 1.0 . Any ideas?

    Thanks. I have another question that you might be able to answer. I just replaced my seats with some nice leathers out of a 98 outback limited. The seats have seat heaters. Do you know how I can hook those up? Is it as easy as going back to the car I took them from and ripping out the seat heater specific wiring. Thanks again for your help.

  8. Hi I have a 97 legacy wagon. about a year ago my dash lights started intermittedly going out. then one day they went out completely. Now if the lights are turned to the off position the radio light is on, but once you turn the lights on the radio light goes off. For a while the automatic shifter light would come on and dim up and down. Now that light is out too. WTF. Does anyone have any answers out there. all the bulb are good I've checked them. Also all the outside lights work fine.

     

     

    Any help would be great. I've become acustomed to driving in the dark but dash lights would be nice.
