I would put money on it being either the front outer or inner cv joint failing.
The reason that it may not be as noticable in 4x4 is that it is taking the load of the front drive.

here in Aus we get BP ultimate which is 98 octaine and I notice about an extra 35 miles per tank, they recon that it is really good for your engine as well.

You may find that you have something that is on all the time and thus draining the battery, charge it up and when you connect it up again check to see if there is a spark as you connect the battery, if there is you have something that is constantly using power and hence draining your battery.the answer to both questions, it is not a new alt , it is a sealed battery from autozone , it is about 1 year old, , the connections are good ,also the alt belt is tight , later on today i will go and buy a new battery , but before that i will have the battery tested ,thanksMike.

They may be to secure the wires for the rear demister, do they clip inbetween the glass and the rubber ?.

Definately sounds like a susspect pump to me as this is a similar thing mine was doing.And yes the pump is located near the wiper motor in the engine bay.
