If you have an update on your situation and what steps you took when the problem quit I would appreciate it. I have been having the same problem for a couple months. It always comes when we are leaving town on the highway. After about a few miles the Engine light comes on. I clear and sometimes it will come back while other times it doesn't. When it first started I thought it was a good time to change the spark plugs. I did that and also changed the wires (OEM). But was disappointed to see the engine light come back. I will follow the steps from the attached PDF's and see what comes up. Let me know if you know more about what curred your problem, as they seem to be very similar problems. Thank you!

Thanks for your help. While I was witing for a reply I tried fiddling with the Vehicle Speed Sensor 2. I found the cable to the sensor was damaged and as a result was causing the faults.

I have a 99 Legacy Outback P0500 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction P1507 Idle control system malfunction (fail-safe) P1540 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction 2 The engine is idleling very rough and I got the following codes. I have found a few treads on this but I haven't found anybody that has posted their fix. If you are one of those folks that has had the exact same problem, can you let me know what fixed it. I have 99 Legacy Outback. I have just had all the same codes except the 301. At idle the car runs very rough and at 4500 RPM the car also is governed. It will not let me go higher RPMs. Please let me know what you did to resolve the malfuction. I will see if I can find more information.
