I think these guys ship, and on a lot of things they've darn reasonable prices, but not on everything. http://halseyimportparts.com/
Example: $119. for hitachi coil at the dealer, $24. at halsey import.

Hello, just wondering what was the last year Subaru quit making part time four wheel drive vehicles?
I want to keep it in mind while keeping my eye out for another Subie.
Also is there any particular model that is the more desirable of the last part time 4 wheelin subies?
Thanks all!

ThePartsbin.com has the hitachi OEM coils for $40
Here( http://halseyimportparts.com/ ) you can get them for $24.00 .
Between the two of them a person otta be able to save a little green.
Yep, I went with the OEM. Figured it's less likely to spawn complications.

Subaru has not used ballast resistors since the days of points and condensor style distributors, which were last used in 1980 IIRC.
The ballast resistors were used to cut down wear on the points and the condensor inside the distributor.
Your's is fully electronic, and uses a hall-effect sensor and a transistorized ignitor to fire the coil and thus has no need of a ballast resistor.
At any rate you should stick with the stock Hitachi coil (or ND if you have that distributor). The stock units are much more rugged than aftermarket, and are designed to be installed horizontally as well as to properly function with the stock ignitor.
GD
How do you tell the difference between the hitachi and the ND distributor.
Thanks!

Thanks GeneralDisorder I appreciate it.

This is in relation to my previous post in that I need to know if the coil from an 86 gl wagon 1.8L carbed has a built in resistor or if it is on the car somewhere? I don't want to put a resistor on the rig if I don't have to and all the coils i'm finding at the parts shops all require an external resistor. I just want to get it right as soon as possible.
Thank you!

Put the question to customer service at msd and will post their answer when it comes.
Thank you!

I couldn't wait for the email so I called support.
The answer is I can use it if I put a 2.3 ohm ballast resistor to it, so as not to burnup the ignitor.
Thank you GeneralDisorder!

Here's something I didn't notice yesterday.
http://www.msdignition.com/cgi-bin/app_guide_3.pl
Yes I punched in the year, make, & model and the coil PN8202 comes up compatible. I wish I'd seen it yesterday.
They don't recommend installing it in the horizontal position(probably shortens life span), but upon checking which one I installed on my ford a few years ago(30k+ mls) it is the same 8202 and in the horizontal position. No problems so far, it's installed with the msd ignition box also though, if that makes a diff.
Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Hello, My stock ignition coil is leaking and I want to upgrade. My question: Is the MSD blaster 2 mdl 8202 coil compatible with 86 GL wagons, and is it just a straight out swap or do I need something else to insure no damage to the electrical system?
Thank you, and all help appreciated!

magnaflow builds a y pipe w/hi flow cat . . . do a search by car on their page. i paid about 130 for mine. i do have the stock y pipe sittin in my garage right now for an 87 gl wagon, it's all yours if you want.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out for future use as I took the wagon to my favorite exhaust shop and he was able to just replace the flex joint for a c note + sam's share, and I thought it was toast. hoeyvae!
Wished I'd seen your post b4 I spent the money, that's if you live anywhere close.

no, more like the stock subaru one isn't prone to failure like the cherokee is.
and, the vast majority of the people putting any money into a power build on a subaru, has a turbo....which means different exhaust.
Me! I think it's a lot of all the above.

I was afraid of that, but was hoping that there might exist a manufacturer out there with a reasonably priced replacement without the cat so that the law abiding customer who wants a different cat that could be installed after the Y would have more choices.
The reason I thought one might exist is that for the wife's cherokee there exists a reasonably priced after market exhaust manifold to replace the over priced factory manifold, which cracks way too soon and has to be replaced. It's similar in that it is steel tubes welded together instead of cast. Oh well, I guess there aren't enough subarus with same exhausts out there to create a profitable enough market for it, unlike the cherokee.
Thank you for the input.

Hello! Just wondering where the best deals are to be had for the front exhaust of an 86 GL wagon? I hope there is some place out there that has an inexpensive replacement for the front exhaust(from the head to just past the y). Any input on this is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Just wondering if anyone knows where to find exploded views of the DCZ 328-504A(as near as I can make out the #'s, maybe more #'s under these #'s but totally unreadable) carburator that was used on the 86 gl wagon 4x4 manual subie?
Of course I'd be interested in a darn good and inexpensive replacement carb if at the right price:grin: .
Thank you!

You are right! It is not so clearly stamped on the side of carb. Read the haynes manual wrong.

This will keep you busy for a while.

IIRC,there is an ea-82 engine parts book at the end of the EA-81 selection.
Good stuff! Too bad the EA-82 service manual parts 1 & 2 wasn't for the 86 year subaru as it only delt with the fuel injected models. The part in the table of contents 2-6 is not there, darn :-\. The rest of the stuff:clap: .

I don't know the gas mileage as it is just getting on the road. It keeps blowing rotten coolant lines and in the course of looking for the newest blown line noticed the vac line that controls the egr is unhooked and plugged off with a bolt. I have a suspicion that may have something to do with it and will checkout emissions system also the evaporative system to see if they will work. It seems to run well but definately needs attention to the maintenance.
Any and all advice will be much appreciated;).
Thank you!
