  1. hey, so the 87 gl kicked the bucket, but i scored an 89 gl for cheap. need to wire up some things the 87 had, but under the dash doesn't have the same sources for 12 that i was previously using. are there any empty/unused connections, or do i have to tap into other things.

also, planning on putting in some kill switches (likely fuel, ignition, maybe starter) since my carpets are out, does anyone know if the ground from the fuel pump runs in the bundle of wires, and what colour it is. and is there somewhere the ignition wires meet at a connector (hopefully under dash), or do i have to go in at the steering column?

  2. so there is the connection that runs the ignition power to the carb. there are 3 different wires... 2 of them are at 12 volts, and 1 is at 5volts. the 2 at 12 volts will both cause clicking when power is added to them. one being the ADS at the front, the other on the drivers side of the carb. Then the 5 volts is what heads over to the passenger side (choke?), which seems low but it works.

any other ideas? other components with vacuums or thermosensors that would prevent idling.

  3. the timing could have moved, but doesn't seem loose... and I can't get it to idle to check it. it's definitely firing on all 4 cylinders.

skip is right about the lack of o2, as it's not a feedback carb, no ecu to get codes. the fuel filter under the car by the fuel pump is the only filter. i will check the ADS, something like that seems to be more likely.

  4. 1987 gl w hitachi carb. randomly died a few times on bumpy roads, some with puddles. everytime it would fire up but idle rough/ or die without pushing on the gas pedal. a couple of times it was really rough and wanting to die until i really revved it up and it gave a bit of a backfire, then it was perfect again. disty cap was dry everytime. changed the fuel filter & pour carb cleaner and seemed to be doing fine. then it happened again and it's not "fixing itself" put new plugs, cap, rotor, sprayed for vacuum leaks, egr seems to be springing back as it should. was able to idle, took it for a spin around the block and barely made it back. cold start up seems to work (choke) and pushing on the gas to rev it can take it up smooth all the way to the redline, but for the life of me it wont idle... rough, jumping revs, or just dies. how can everything work so well, but not at idle? carb? lacking fuel at idle? help! thanks.

  5. Yeah, I know there are quite a few island people on here... I just haven't been around the board lately, so I'm not quite sure what they are up to.

It's not the oil passage gasket because we found that one and it is an original, although it looks like it was damaged by someone who previously "repaired" something in the area... so maybe they added that square one as a lazy fix.

  6. A buddy is replacing the head gaskets on an EA82 and has managed to discover a small square rubber seal stuck to a rack. Is there a seal like that anywhere in the camshaft housing or cylinder head? Everything so far appears round... if there is a home for it, where does it go?? Thanks.

  7. What sort of performace or physical results can you notice during your driving if your engine or tranny mounts start getting bad. I haven't had time, or good weather to actually take a look at the yet. But if I peel out on wet pavement or something, then I get a pretty bad shuttering... (CV's have been replaced) Thanks.

  8. A problem has come up in the auto loyale that is seems to have a squeak/sqeal coming from it ONLY at 2250 rpm. I have never noticed that, but apparantly after someone test driving it, it seems to do this now. I've been busy with school exams, so haven't really checked out too much. All I can think or right now is alt belts, maybe a waterpump, or crazy exhaust rattles. Thanks in advance. Gotta love it when strangers mess things up for ya.

  9. I'm glad you're getting so much enjoyment outta this Martin:banghead:

Nah, it's not total enjoyment. It's not fun working on the subes when you have to. Preventative maintanence, or fixing things when you have time seem to go a lot faster. That thing has just been one dumb thing after another for you. But it will have to be in perfect running order soon.

  10. They will run you about $400 for the trannie, cv's/axles, diff, and driveshaft at the wreckers and it should only take a day to install. The d/r 5 spd was the best money I spent on my car.

Dan's car's going to be sweet, sounds like he's going to run my td04 and wrx intercooler with an HKS downpipe. Mt.Cain's roads are going to get sessioned!

Oooh, sounds cool. Seeing how noone else got to use Mt Cain roads this year, I dont see why you shouldn't be get to go out for a sesh. First I need to find some turbo wagon that isn't rusty (you have all the luck Trevor) and then I can get going on all of the other stuff. Maybe I'll get something going in the summer when I have more time. Even though my carb'd sube is managing to perform very well for herself, it's just not the same. Were you guys thinking of going down to WCSS?

  11. welcome to the board!

i'm in Coquitlam so we are like 30(i think) minutes away from each other... my dad always takes our 01 legasy to the fountain tire at the bottom of the hill i live on... they do good work at a decent price...

you coming down to the suby show??? we always want more people! and since you drove across the country the drive to washington is a piece of cake! i think it'll be like a 3 hour drive maybe more in my 79... you wannasee a brat??? one of 7 in BC??? i just found a guy who owns 5 of them...

phone me up if you wanna get some info... 604-831-5372 (anytime after 3... i'm in school!)

5 of them... he must want to give one to me....

  12. Roof rack noise seems to come from any horizontal bar you have off the roof up front. I had a rack that was maybe 5" high up front and it howled like a husky in heat when I was at highway speeds.

You could always get one of those air deflectors (fairings?) to reduce noise at highway speeds and not use the bars when you dont need anything on the roof.

  13. It's been a while since you did the actual work is it not? Just making sure that you are ruling out coolant that may have been spilled in the process and some air in the system taking coolant from the expansion tank. I would guess it's some pinhole leak in one of the hoses... maybe the same one that you just changed on the turbo wagon. The hose in the white loyale had 3 holes before I could actually find it and the coolant wasn't just burning off instantly. It might take some time, but I'm sure you are bound to find it. I am guessing you will be looking for leaks tomorrow... haven't moved yet have you??

  14. True enough. Oh well, it's a labour of love yada yada yada...

I don't think penetrating oil will do much considering I had oil droplets spraying out from the seal when I reved it:lol:

I have already broken a pick off in the seal. Might try another stronger one if I can get my hands on one. Otherwise out comes the rad and in goes the drill...

    wish me luck:drunk:

What, you mean it is just not "simply sliding out"?? Hopefully this doesn't turn into another "intake-like" project...

  15. I'm sure next time there could be a lot more subarus rounded up if there is more notice too. Just we were working on some subarus and had to drive our subarus there... before we knew it, 4 EA82's just hanging out. haha.

Hey, you can have plenty of fun in a stock subaru. Next time maybe we'll do some loggin' road cruisin or something. We could go up harborview to shields lake but theres a few gatekeeper obstacles that could mean rocker damage to a stock suby if not driven with some care. Its up to you. you could get some 14" 6lug toyota 2wd rims for dirt cheap, drill em out for 4 lug, and stick some 205/75/14 tires(about 25-26") without a lift. You'd be good to follow us along the main trails for sure. not everything is as tight as my back yard.
  16. What ski season, I normally tour the interior but having a daughter this Dec messed with all that so I've mostly stayed on the Island and the mountain bike this year. Good wrenching whether not that it matters to me anymore cause I have a large shop:banana: now lol. Let us know how things go with your Sube, sounds like you have a good chance of making 500k I'm at 394k right now with gobs of power and good fuel economy whoooooot.

A large shop... and the rest of us are outside like suckers... hahaa. I still have to see the finished results. I hear is also does well racing people down the highway....
