  1. First off Ive owned 4 subarus, love them! Matter of fact I just convinced my gf to get a forester over a Ford Escape. Anyways, I have this '96 2.2 legacy parts car lying around, no engine, interior stripped and its going to the scrap yard this weekend. I want to know what the transmission housing is made from. Is it aluminum or Magnesium? Or a mix? If a mix, what mix? Basically Im pondering on whether its worth cutting the tranny out and scrapping it separately. Also if anybody knows what the factory alloy wheels are made from that would be helpful too, the five spoke ones. Thanks in advance guys. And if anyone lives in the NH area and needs an automatic tranny that works great, let me know, just have to take it before saturday.
  2. Thanks for the info, yeah i will, and Im going to photo document the process too because the single most challenging thing about it seems to be finding good info about it. Aparently alot of people have done it but theres no basic guide anywhere and Ive still got alot of questions. Ive been reading everything I can find on the swap. basic goals: remove and modify motor to fit in bug Modify tranny for strength Mcgyger together a cooling system Commence the wiring nightmare Consume Beer Conclude the wiring nightmare Consume beer Enjoy result:)
  3. Im planning on a subaru 2.2 swap into my '74 bug this summer. Ive got a '96 legacy auto for the swap but Ive read that the tranny has its own computer? And that the engines ECU recieves input from the tranny? Im not sure on this but basically what im wondering is this... Will this motor run normally using an automatic wiring harness without an automatic tranny there anymore? My guess is yes because Ive heard of people converting to manual trannys. Im 99% sure itll fine. Any input on this? Is that just a load of crap?
  4. UPDATE, Those purple wheels strangely work on that car lol, never thought Id say that but it looks "matched" It actually wasnt anything rubbing, the front swaybar was just basically positioned wrong and I fixed it yesterday, there are all sorts of noises in the front now though, and I think my CV joints arnt happy about the lift, I noticed clicking on sharp turns sometimes now. That and I think the sway links ar binding adn making noise with the increased angle, did you experience any of these issues?
  5. I just finished putting outback struts in my '95 legacy Dethwagon. Im very very happy with the new ground clearance. Heres my question, I wanna put outback wheels on it too for a little bit more clearance and improved "beefiness" BUT.... As it is with stock wheels it rubs when I cut completely one way or the other, its just this stupid aluminum thing that I can just beat back or cut off, BUT what I wanna know is how big a deal it'll be with the outback wheels? Has anyone had to do anything major.. or is it pretty much just a matter of trimming some "fat"? Random funny story, the first time i drove it with the struts and noticed they were rubbing at full wheel lock i was just careful for awhile, at one point i was forced to reverse like that though and it shredded one of my front tires..
  6. Awesome! Thanks Milesfox! Saved me a trip to the junkyard, and yup I am installing outback struts but with the stock springs, I already did the back so it sits funny right now, The fronts should be in tomorow
  7. Lol yes, it was Eraser, when I was little Id always be buying and selling stuff to people like some italian pawnshop dude and so some people gave me the Nickname Tony, since then Ive used it:rolleyes:
  8. Ahh crap, i did some more searching and i think the TCS only came on the FWD legacies...
  9. Its a '95 Legacy LS Wagon, yeah i figured it may be a pain, I cant seem to find much info about the TC. It would just be really nice to have. Ive seen LSD's but never for less than 300 bucks, I was kinda humoring some simple addon to the ABS system I could find in a junkyard...probly not the case though. Yeah applying brakes does help, lol if the ABS worked all the time..Ive got a loose connection somewhere i need to hunt down, it works like every other time i start the car haha. Perks of beating the crap out of the thing every day.
  10. This may seem like a dumb question but are the front springs on a '95 Legacy the same on both sides on the front? Meaning could I use the left spring on the right and vice versa? Reason I ask is because of having the same broken spring an mine and the parts car
  11. Ive read that traction control was an option in the 90's legacys, was this for all models, only the outbacks or what? Im kinda curious because I live in a rather extreme location and alot of the time I get stuck where Ive got just 1 tire spinning on either side of the car and if the traction control suby made actually worked well that would be pretty useful just for those ocasions. its my understanding that it basically just uses the ABS which Ive got, would it be possible to make my '95 legacy have TC by swapping whatever electronics Id need? Im guessing it would be either pretty easy or a nightmare... Has anyone had it, i mean did it work well or no? Id pretty much just want it for being stuck, never driving. ANd id imagine it would be easier than like finding a LSD rear end or something.
  12. Numbchux, yeah I noticed that picture, I was hoping it was just a stock picture. Damn, Alright well that should be easy enough to find, thanks for the info!
  13. Ok another question, I need to know what years will fit, My car is a '95 Legacy LS, I found these on Ebay dirt cheap, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-02-Subaru-Outback-SHOCKS-STRUTS-Full-Set-NEW-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQfitsZModelQ3aOutbackQQhashZitem4cf453017cQQitemZ330516595068QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories I dont know which years are compatible so Im not sure, would struts from a '00 fit a '95? Any help would be appreciated 45 times over, I cant seem to find a guide on this anywhere

  15. That sounds like a pretty good number, I think i read while poking around that with the springs your looking at 2-2.5 inches. So your positive I can use my stock springs and the struts will bolt right in? This seems like a pretty useful and easy upgrade:D
  16. Im doing my struts and I noticed alot of people seem to change to the outback struts for a bit more clearance, they cost pretty much the same as the regular Legacy struts too. If I were to use all outback struts on my '95 Legacy LS wagon than how much ride height would I gain? and do they bolt right in? Would I need the outback springs as well?:-\ I was planning on using my stocker springs. I drive the car everyday so I dont want it rediculously high but I bottom out alot where I live. I havent been able to find a straightforward answer on this yet anywhere yet via searching.
  17. Damn, well the other day in my curiosity I had the guy at the autoparts store compare a legacy and an imprezza strut, apparently according to him the imprezza strut was a bit shorter so Id imagine even if it were to fit exactly youde mess up your ride height, so its probably a no go. Especially where I live (the middle of nowhere) lol. I need all the ground clearance I can get.
  18. I need to replace my rear struts and these things are hella expensive. I found a great deal on a new set of Rear struts for a '95 imprezza. Are they the same? The guy only wants 70 bucks for the both
  19. Ive got a '92 AWD Legacy wagon automatic non turbo. The tranny is weak and I just found a replacement but Ive heard that they come with different gear ratios in the differentials. How do I find out what gear ratio is in my car and how can I tell if the tranny I might buy has the same ratio? Is there some easily distinguishable marking on the transmission somewhere? Id like to find out before I drive all the way they're, its like 2 hours away.
  20. I was bored one night a while ago so I started screwing around with my drivers seat to see if I could make it more comfortable. I unbolted the front 2 bolts and shimmed a couple 1 inch blocks underneath it then sat in it. It was way more comfortable than before, kinda like laying into it rather than sitting on it. I then made some metal brackets that raised the front of the seat by 2 inches and used the factory mounting holes in the floor still. What an amazing difference! I swear I could sleep in that seat afterwards, plus it feels like Im driving a small SUV or something now. I removed 1 of the 2 bolts that hold the seat to the draveshaft hump toward the middle of the car so that it could pivot backwards. The seat is rock solid and completely safe. Ill take a picture next time I get the chance. By the way why was this site not working for like a month?
  21. First off hi, I just registered here the other day and this place is a treasure trove of info! Alright so I bought a '91 Legacy AWD awhile ago for 100 bucks. Did a bunch of body work and stuff and just the other day I changed the water pump and timing belt. Real easy on these cars by the way. Anyways Ive got a strange problem now, the coolant system isnt building pressure. It gets up to temperature and stays there but you can squeeze the upper radiator hose under the hood and its like the car isnt running. It is hot though. There arnt any huge clouds of steam or anything coming out of the exhaust and it dousnt apear to be losing coolant, at least not a noticeable amount from me driving to the end of my road and back. No coolant in the oil according to me checking the dipstick. And the engine seems to run fine. Now if I rev the engine while holding the hose I can feel it pressurize then shrink back down to no pressure with the rpm drop. I ran the car (very briefly) with most of the coolant drained in order to drive it up onto some ramps but it was no more than a minute from a cold start. Could I have possibly overheated it while refilling the coolant system? The thing thats bugging me now too is that before now I only drove the car to my house so I dont know if it was doing this before or if I somehow caused it. I really hope the headgaskets arnt leaking though. Any ideas ?
