  1. I so here you. I pulled by 2.5DOHC and replaced it with a 2.2 EJ from a 99. Never had done much Subaru work before,so on a long holiday weekend to get it back on the road for Monday. I swapped my 2.5 heads on the 2.2 block. I just could not stand the piston slapp any longer(it was like my ex-wife- got noiser with age without any net benefit....)

If i had wanted a diesel I would have bought one.

Anyhow, I have a little noise on start up (maybe loose valve clearence?) a little rough idle at times but all in all I don't miss the 2.5 block.

Note: if I had an adapter plate to bolt the 2.5 intake on the 99 -2.2 heads I would have used them. They are a beautiful design, and easy to adjust. Easy I like.

I will try the adjustment, without the tool.

I too have found these forums priceless.

    thanks to all who post.

  2. Hi All.

I spoke with Terry at CCR Engines in Denver. He was great. Very knowledgable. as most of the people on this forum.

    Some of my Interchangability summary/updates.

    Remember I removing a 2.5 l DOHC (1998) Auto and Replacing it with a 2.2L SOHC (1990) from a 5 Spd car.

The Y from the 2.2 l must be used. The 2.5 l DOHC (1998) has two exhaust ports per head. The 2.2L SOHC (1999) has one 2.2L SOHC (1999).

I am replacing the intake manifold on the 2.2L SOHC (1999) with one from a 2.2L (1996) auto trans. it has the same injectors wiring EGR and TPS sensor setup as the 2.5 l DOHC (1998).

Obviously, I need to use the flex plate from the 2.5 l DOHC (1998). The 2.2 l was from a 5 Spd and thus had a flywheel.

At last, I must check the number of metal bumps that trigger the sensor on the cam and crank pulleys. I'm looking for a seven and six confiruration respectfully.

Asumming they match, fliuds, several gaskets, and I'm good to go.

If I have forgot anything let me know.

  3. I will try to keep my questions and comments simple concise and to the point.

I would like To swap a 2.2 EJ SOHC from a 99 impreza that was bolted to a Manual transmission into a 1998 outback with a 2.5 EJ DOHC auto transmission.

    My research has told me:

    1. I need to have an intake with an EGR value. That means from a 96 and newer 2.2.

    2. The crank and cam gears-sensors may need changing.

    3. The y pipe will have to be changed. That’s easy.

    4. Some manipulation of the power steering lines.

I keep asking similar questions because I keep getting inconsistent information.

Some threads read--- change the intake,,,they infer put the intake from the 2.5 onto the 2.2. My eyesight tells me they are not interchangeable.

Some people suggest change the heads. That raises other questions,

Will ej25 dohc heads fit on an ej22 sohc block?

If so what would the new Compression Ratio be?

    What head gaskets to use?

Back to research and information, I have worked on autos for 30 years. I have COMPLETELY restored approx 7 vehicles. My last two were a Porsche 911 and a Porsche 944. I have also tried retrieving information from several Subaru Dealerships.

The trouble is,,, your speaking with service advisers many (Not All) that don’t know how to change a tire.

If there is one thing I can share is, ask people who have done it (who know) for advice. Not the people who pay to have it done and talk about the job like they have done it themselves. People who THINK but have never tried to do it, or have done it are guessing and thus pass on inconsistent information.

Wanting to hear from people who KNOW has brought me to this forum. I am more than grateful to any one who can share and fill in my information gaps. And thus I have no problem sharing the knowledge that I have gained working on my first Subaru. If that means repeating myself once in a while well that’s okay. We will all do that as we get older anyhow.

If I could figure out how to start a new thread I would do so.

As for my questions I more than grateful to anyone who can help.

If someone doesn’t know the answers that’s okay don’t waste your keyboard strokes with making snarky comments. That is, what is really a waste of everyone’s time.

I apologize If this sounds short , it’s getting Late

  4. Hi All,

I apologize if I offended any one. I made several postings only because being new to this forum I could not see where each posting was registering / coming up.

I know I have a lot of questions; only because I don’t want to get half way into the job to find out it is not doable.

I would be grateful if anyone can lend insight from their experience on any of these questions.

As for PMs I selected several individuals, who seemed to have knowledge in this area. As a new member I was not aware it is poor manners to do so.

Again, I hope I have not offended anyone…

  5. Help,,,

I'm thinking of replacing my engine in my 1998 outback AT 2.5 DOHC with an engine 2.2 EJ from a 1999 impreza Manual transmission.

This is my first Subaru, GREAT CAR, a crapp engine- Piston swap and a noisy rod bearing. Despite the fact I did a full rebuilt 10 km ago. The thought of opening that engine case again almost makes me ill.

I have already bought the 2.2 EJ engine and exhaust system. low miles and excellent leak down. It was a great deal.

Will the intake manifold from the 2.5 EJ DOHC AT fit on the 2.2 EJ SOHC MT?

The gaskets look different. Will an adapter plate work?

Will 2.5 EJ DOHC heads go on the 2.2 EJ block? what would the CR be? Can I use 2.5 head gaskets? I have an extra pair...

Do I need to change the ECM?

What about the Power Steering lines?

the Y pipe I'm okay with..

    please help...

  8. Help,,,

I'm thinking of replacing my engine in my 1998 Outback AT 2.5 DOHC (for all af the previously listed reasons) with an engine 2.2 EJ from a 1999 impreza Manual transmission. Actually I have already bought the engine and exhaust system.

OK, guys. Here's some clarification for those who are asking.

I'm not saying you can't use any other year but '95, but it's the one with the least hassle:

Prior to '95 the EJ22 left head did not have an EGR port. ('93 and '94 did have a place to drill and tap however.) '95 EJ22 had an EGR as did years after that, BUT the exhaust ports went from dual to single in '96. The EJ25 exhaust system is dual port, so it won't match properly to a single port head.

Also, the wiring on the '95 intake manifold plugs into the EJ25 wiring harness with no modifications and no ECU changes.

    It's a '95 EJ22 and a '95 intake manifold.

(I don't drink anything that has "Fat" in the name :drunk: )

And, remember guys, I learned dang near everything I know (about Subarus anyway ;) from Rick.

You need a 1995 2.2L to do this. Reason being.....'95 2.2L had the EGR, and duel port exhaust. The '96 2.2L has single port exhaust. So to use a '96 you would have to replace at leat your Y-pipe. You can't use '90-94 2.2L because they didn't have EGR.

I don't know what the reason would have been for using a '96 intake manifold. I would think you could use the intake off whatever 2.5L you are replacing. If you use the intake and sensors off your old engine you shouldn't have any issues with fuel control, unless there was a problem before you started.
