    Thanks everyone for the response, I suspected head gasket but wasn't sure.

    He's asking $6900. The car is a limited edition and he says he changed the thermostat but hadn't done anything else to determine the problem.

    I am looking at purchasing a 99 legacy outback with about 93,000 miles on it. The owner says that the car overheated but stopped when he removed the thermostate. He says that he hasn't had a chance to look at the problem but he thinks it may be the headgasket. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks
