  1. 1995 Legacy L AWD auto. Turns out after further investigation that the gear inside the diff is the issue. Last night i pulled the speed sensor out, put the car on a lift at my job and low and behold the drive was not spinning. Stuck a screw driver in the slot and turned it a little and started and stopped spinning, so the gear must be chewed up and have bad spots in it. This is gonna be fun......LOL
  2. It seems when it rains it pours. My speedometer stopped working a few days ago and I thought it was related to the gear inside the diff. Last night I removed the sensor, looked where the slot was positioned, moved my car looked again and the slot was in a different position. I am assuming the gear inside is ok. Today I purchased a new speed sensor, installed it and drove around the block only to find the speedometer still does not work. Now I have read the cluster could be an issue as well. Before my speedometer stopped completely here is what was going on. It would work and then when I lifted off the throttle and began coasting it would stop and drop to zero. Then when I accelerated again it would go back up to speed until finally it just stopped all together. Why would accelerating and decelerating have an effect? I returned the new sensor since it did not fix my issue. Does this sound like the cluster is bad? How can I make sure before I have to buy one someplace? Sorry for all the silly questions, but I really want to keep this car since it runs and drives great and I put 150 miles per day on it going to and from work. Even gets me 26 mpg on the highway. Thanks in advance for all answers. Is there anything else besides the sensor or the cluster that would cause my speedometer not to work. It is important for me since i drive on the highway allot and the police can be picking as to how fast you go...... I was told there is a wire repair to the cluster that works. I was wondering is someone can post a step by step proceedure on this? It was for a 1999 Legacy, but was curious if it would work on mine....
  3. Well that really is bad. I guess I will keep an ear out for any noise from the bearing. What seemed to be an easy seal replacement has now turned out to be a possible problem for my only car. Trying to fix the leaking seal before it lost all the fluid in the diff has turned out to be a reall issue. Why are the axle seals not servicable without removing that side cover? Is it different on the newer models? Well I will pray that I got the backlash pretty close to where it was before I took it apart and just listen if the noise gets louder. I'm really bummed about this now. Been working on cars, race cars, engines for over 20 years and never saw anything like this before. Thanks for all your input guys.......
  4. The filler neck was rusted out, but I replaced it with a new one and reset the light. The P0441 code keeps coming back so now I know where to start looking. Thanks for the info.
  5. Well I did not count the turns since it was siezed and te seal was damaged as well. I wad to actually break the cover upon removal. I have had enough transmission and diffs apart to realize the carrier bearing was help by this cover. So you mean to tell me since it was not removed and measured there is going to be an issue? I screwed the cover in all the way and backed it off slightly before locking it down with the lock nut. I have been driving it for several hundred miles and have not heard anything out of the ordinary or any vibrations. It has 120,000 miles on it and I don't have the cash for a new diff, even if it comes from the junkyard. Also upon further investigation the gear seems to be intact and I am guessing that just the speed sensor has failed. I am going to replace the sensor and see what happens. There is no other way to set the carrier bearing clearance? For example screw the cover all the way tight and then back off 1/4 or some thing like that? Thanks again for your input.
  6. What is involved in replacing the shaft/gear? i HAVE A 95 LEGACY AT with AWD. I damaged the gear when removing the side cover to replace the leaking axle seal. I had to drill it out and cut it because it was oxidized to the diff case. I would have left the seal leak but thought it would have been easir than it was.
  7. I have this code and have replaced the purge valve already with a new one. Same code. Has anyone else had this code and an area that might be leaking from. My car is a 1995 Legacy L automatic with AWD. I pray I don't have to remove the fuel tank due to RUST...LOL. Any advice would be great. I don't have access to a smoke machine otherwise it would be easier to find. Thanks in advance.
  8. How do I replace the small black gear located on the bottom of the VSS inside the front diff. I have a 1995 Legacy L automatic AWD. I had to replace the axle seal on the right side and in removing the RUSTED SOLID side cove that holds the seal I accidentally damaged the gear on the bottom of the VSS. It worked for about a week and then the speedo stopped working and I got an extra code for the VSS. I have the gear and upon removal of the VSS there is a slotted drive that it fits into. The gear is bigger than the hole so I imagine I need to remove the side cover again any help would be great. Thanks in advance.
