  1. yeah thats what i discovered. thanks a bunch. I definitely have the vacuum advance done first. that is just like the old one. I still have the EGR valve in place but it is gonna be a pain to plug it into the front of the carb because: see attached photo- the rubber cap going strait up and almost touching the bottom adapter plate of the carb is the metal hose going to the EGR valve. I might just have to cut the metal pipe down a bit.

Also I yanked out the anti afterburn valve and the air control valves. I just caped the hoses leading to them right at the manifold. it was a big spaggetti bowl of hoses that are gone now. that all seems fine, I just hope there isn't some reason I need those that i can't think of.

I capped the vent hose going to the cannister also just cause there is no port on the carb where it is supposed to connect to. there is just a hole there.

Also how is important is the idle cut off solinoid? my old one doesn't fit into the port that the weber has. do I need to get a new one or can I just leave it.

if any of you guys see somethine that doesn't sound right that i've done or have any other thoughts on this I would love to hear it. thanks a bunch.

  2. Sorry for the weber questions but I couldn't find the answers by just searching. I don't know too much about carbs. the only carb stuff I have done was just a regular rebuild and reinstall. so I just hooked up everything exactly how it was before(easy enough to label hoses). But I am putting a rebuilt weber in an EA81 that had a hitachi, so i'm rerouting the hoses right now and I'm not sure what I can get rid of. I want to cap off everything I don't need and just get it out of there.

do I need to reconnect the egr hose?

how about the idle cut off solinoid?- the old one doesn't fit on the weber

which of vacuum hoses can I get rid of? like the ones on the air control vacuum valve.

sorry for the long question, I'm just a bit lost with where to rout some of these hoses, and everybody on this site has helped me out a bunch in the past, so thanks in advance for any insight you all might have.

  3. Looking for a weber. i'm gonna need everything for it. the adapter plate for a ea81 from a 85 brat, a rebuild kit if necessary. maybe a manual. it has a right side throttle cable. I live in the Portland area. anybody know of one of these around or know of some good places to look for one? thanks a bunch.

  4. I don't know how to tell if its a CA spec carb or not. If i look down the carb with the engine off, and i pull the throttle cable with my hand fuel definitely squirts out. so i assume this means the pump and everything are working. I think the float might be off. the sight glass shows only a tiny bit of fuel in the bottom edge of it. should there be more? even with the engine off?

  5. I have an 85 brat with an EA81 engine. it starts and idols fine, but if you give it any gas, even in neutral, it hesitates and almost dies or does die. if you feather the gas you can get the rpm's up and sorta start driving but it has no power and still is trying to die. it feels like a fuel issue but i've replaced the fuel filters and the fuel pump is fine. i've had the distributor rebuilt with new vacuum. I don't think the egr valve is really working, but that only makes a difference while the engine is heating up, right? Does this look like a carb issue? any ideas would be very much appreciated. I love this car and I am completely stumped as to how to get it running again. thanks alot.

  6. sorry guys, not paying attention. thanks for the reply's. Its a 85 brat with EA81 1.8 L.

and now my problems just got a whole lot worse. after getting up to full speed it losses power and hesitates to the point of dying. if you just give it a bunch of gas, in or out a gear, it will sputter and die. it is now undrivable. its got a new fuel filter the fuel pump is working fine. i'm wondering if it could be an issue with the distributor. the points look fine but i don't know how to check the vacuum- if the little diaphram in there is working. I feel like i've checked everything else.

    any ideas? thanks alot.

  7. 85 Gl 1.6L. This happens exactly the same everytime.

In the morning on a cold start I pump the gas once to engage the choke right before starting. starts fine and idols fine. then while driving when the temp hits normal and stops rising, the engine dies and will not start for 5 minutes or so. then starts perfect and is fine for the rest of the day. maybe choke sticking? thanks a bunch, sorry for the weird question. any insight or hypotheses would be much appreciated.
