  1. I'm picking an old project up again and need some help to test a EA81 engine on a test stand . I have the engine running on the test stand for a very short while as the cooling radiator was not connected . I'd like to test the engine for longer and connect the radiator and water pipes . I've connected the radiator main pipes to the water pump ans thermostat housing on the manifold . I need some advice on the 2 heater hoses , one coming from the water pump and the other from the manifold ? Can I connect these hoses together so the water flows around the engine as I will not be using a heater core ? Also should I leave the cooling fan on the radiator running on constantly as I test the engine to avoid any overheating ? Any help / advice appreciated . Thanks . Tucker
  2. Does this need to be connected for engine bench test ?
  3. I've attached some pics of pipes I'm not sure of
  4. I'm bench testing an EA81 and have managed to start and run the engine thanks to help from an earlier post requesting help . I can rev the engine fine but I can't maintain an idle so I'm guessing that it's a vacuum problem with one of the pipes . I'm not sure which pipes need to be blocked or if it could be something else
  5. Pics of the valves are as they are at timing set at TDC. If something is not right I hope someone can chime in with some advice . Thanks.
  6. Position of valves at TDC for #1 and #3 cylinders
  7. I managed to get the engine to fire but not run even for a few seconds . Firing order is 1-3-2-4 counter clockwise . I have been using easy start in the carb. I have attached some pics of my ignition timing settings and of the valves .
  8. I have had the distributor out to position the rotor at #1 cylinder . So it may be 180 degrees out . Should I set the flywheel at the 0 mark TDC rather than 8 BTDC ? Thanks
  9. Thanks for the replies . I have checked and cleaned the plugs . Timing is set at 8 btdc at the flywheel . Distributor rotor arm is pointing at # 1 cylinder . I just want to check if rotor arm should be pointing at #1 cylinder lead at the rotor cap or at #1 at the lead on the cylinder head . Also where does piston #1 need to be when cranking the engine to get it started with the timing .thanks
  10. Bench testing an EA81 engine cranks over but won't fire . I have can verify the following 1) spark at the plugs 2) fuel in the carby 3) timing set at 8 btdc at flywheel 4)good compression 5)new coil (wires Yellow negative and black and white positive side of coil) 6)spark leads in correct firing order I think it could be a timing issue or distributor settings but would appreciate some advice. Thanks. Tucker
  11. Thanks for the replies. I have a spark but the engine does not fire. I replaced the coil as I thought I might be getting a weak spark during compression . What is the function of the ignition module ? And what are the symptoms of a failed iginition module ? Thanks
  12. Have tested the coil negative while cranking and the test light shows very weak pulse flicker . The test light flickers very dim and not bright ? Should the test light be bright and clearly flicker on and off while cranking ? Thanks
  13. has spark at the coil & coil lead has spark at the plugs has fuel in the carby tdc, disty set correctly good compression still won't fire what am i missing here Is it possible for a faulty module to still a throw a spark to the plugs ? or would it be a no spark situation at the plugs? I can't see what else it can be and its the only part that I have not replaced. thanks
  14. I need some advice to test an igniter module from my Hitachi disty . Is there any test with a multimeter ? should there be continuity between the two terminals on the ignition module ? Thanks. Tucker.
  15. I've placed the test light on the - and + of the coil with ignition on , no light ? cranked over and very dim blinking .I then have checked again with the distributor out and turning the Distributor gear by hand grounding to engine and test light shows very dim blinking as distribtor gear turns. Are these symptoms of a faulty ingniter unit in the distributor ?
  16. ok, tried again , followed all instructions regarding straw test for piston tdc and rotor at #1 cylinder on plug tower . Still does'nt fire ! Following up Cougars post the 12v test probe lights up bright with igntion on when testing the coil from first the + side of coil to ground then from - side pf coil to ground. However when the same test is done with the engine cranking over the probe light goes dim and is no longer bright .Also the test light does not pulsate i.e light does not go On and Off just stays dim. This is the same testing both sides of the coil individually + and then - when cranking. Is this a problem with the firing pulse ? I'm not sure why this is happening ?
